Trimmer Preview Windows Needed

AttStrPure wrote on 4/30/2010, 3:44 PM
Hello everyone, I'm new to these forums, and over looking over a few archived posts I still couldn't find my answer. I've been a fan of the Trimmer ever since I learned the basics of Final Cut Pro, and want to set up the Trimmer to have my workspace function similarly to FCP's. What I want is the trimmer to have a little timeline at the bottom, with the main space being the trimmer's own preview window. I had it set up like this on my old computer, but I have recently bought a new computer (and therefore re-installed Vegas Pro 8.1), and the trimmer shows only the timeline part of it. I even tried installing a trial of Vegas Pro 9.0d, and the trimmer shows up exactly the way it used to for me in 8.0/8.1. I've restarted my computer a few times, and even gone into the internal preferences in 8.1 and set both "Trimmer Single Frame" (as a forum thread said to try) and "Enable trimmer video preview" to TRUE. "Trimmer Single Frame" seems to do nothing, and "Enable trimmer video preview" just sets the preview to the normal Vegas timeline/canvas preview screen.

If you want to see an example of what I need, here's a video I recorded.

Vegas Pro 8.1 shows what I currently have, and 9.0 shows what I want. Today, 9.0 reverted to what 8.1/8.0 has, so neither version of Vegas has a preview windows for the trimmer.

I think Vegas can do what you want in 8.1 ( personally I don't recommend using 8.1 but rather 8.0c 32 bit. or 9.0d 64bit ) .. got this from the Vegas help. Search the help on "trimmer window" and read the rest...basically within the trimmer window you need to select the button icon that says "show video monitor" and make sure that the trimmer window is large enough to show it.

If you want to display a dedicated video monitor in the Trimmer window, select the Show Video Monitor button . When the video monitor is on, you can click the Show Video Frames button to show or hide video frames in the Trimmer timeline.

It is an EITHER or OR situ.

We get only one Preview Window, which is shared between Timeline and Trimmer.

Oh, BTW, I've just noticed that I don't have to click off the Trimmer Preview to have the Timeline Previewing? When did they slip that one in?

Grazie

Actually I have confused xberk's reply. Of course the Trimmer has its own Preview window! Fool . .. Apologies.

It is NOT an either/or situation. If you view my video, you will see that. I still cannot get it to work, even with help from xberk's post. There is no such button on Vegas 8.0/8.1, only 9.0d, and even on 9.0 it did nothing for me.

The Show Video Monitor button in the Trimmer was introduced in 8.0 - it's definitely in 8.0c, I just checked.

In 8.1, I do not have any buttons past (to the right of) "Select parent media," while in the trial of 9.0d I do have button past it.

That's weird - I don't have 8.1, but I've never known a feature "disappear" from a previous version.

I'm sure you've already tried extending the width of the Trimmer in case there wasn't "room" - one other faint possibility - sometimes with script icons in the toolbar above the timeline, icons can "be there" even though they're not visible, and you can still click in the space and they work - I've never encountered this in the Trimmer, but that's all I can come up with.

Maybe someone else with 8.1 installed can have a look .......

Ok. I see what you mean. I don't run 8.1 Vegas ( and very very few people do from what I can tell from the forum .. not a very stable version of Vegas) -- but you are right. There is no such button in 8.1 ... I had to fire up an old computer of mine to get to a copy of 8.1 -- and when I did --- I see you are absolutely right and probably gone half crazy by now. What might be forgotten here is that 8.1 never was updated to 8.1C .. 8.0c ( I think) made the change in the trimmer window ( or some version after 8.0) -- 8.1 does not have a separate trimmer window as in 8.0c .. but close to it. Here's what the 8.1 HELP SAYS:

• If you want to edit in the Trimmer window without updating the Video Preview window, right-click the media file in the Trimmer Window and clear the Show Video in Preview Window command.

This should separate the Trimmer from the preview as in 8.0c .. I'd also right-click the media file in the Trimmer Window and check " VIDEO HEIGHT LARGER" .. this might help --

Fire back at me if this is not what you wanted.

Yes, that rings a bell Paul - I think 8.1 was released as the first 64bit version, even though it didn't have all the 8.0 features ...

Just to close this off Peter --- my solution is not what AttStrPure was looking for -- what was wanted was the way the trimmer works in 8.0c and above, which 8.1 just doesn't do. You can see the event in the trimmer -- you can SCRUB the whole thing and see the content of the event clearly. But you cannot press PLAY and have it PLAY in the trimmer window. To play the event, you must right click on the event and check "show video in preview window" -- then the event PLAYS in the main preview window and therefore the main preview window no longer shows what is on the main timeline but what is in the trimmer. You must keep switching back and forth --- one more reason to not use 8.1 ..

Case closed. - Paul

8.1 came before 8.0c and the new trimmer preview feature came first within 8.0c. It's not yet in 8.1.
