Trimming adverts from films

Total noob at video editing here, just purchased Vegas Studio to edit some home DV footage but first i needed to top 'n tail and trim the advert breaks out of some programs i've recorded from TV on my DVD recorder.

I can import the recorded programs or films from the DVD created by my Liteon recorder fine (Although it seems to chop the film up into 3 or 4 seperate chunks when it imports it) and then all i need to do is to cut out the bits prior to the program and locate and chop out the advertisment breaks. Cant work out how to do this though!

Thought it would just be like a normal audio editor (i'm familiar with Cubase et al) where I can drag to select a portion of the video on the timeline and simply press cut. This just deletes the entire movie though.

I've been through the help files and googled it but still no joy. Heres what i'm doing:

Import the movie - Click the 'Selection Edit Tool' - A little dashed box appears - i try to select say a few mins of advert and drag out a selection to cut - it just highlights the entire movie so when i try to cut it just removes the entire film.

Whats the best way to simply chop out these ad breaks?

Any help much appreciated!
