trouble w/customize video effects

Hi
I'm having trouble customizing film effects. I am using the demo for Platinum 6.
I add the film effect, low quality color film. I set it to the color I want, then the type (scratches) then the amount. No matter when I hit save, it always goes back to dust and the amount varies but it never stays at scratches. Anyone else have problems with this? I couldn't get this to work on Studio 4 either. It always went back to dust on that one as well.
thanks.

Are you typing in a name for the template? If you don't give it a name, you can't save it; you'll just end up with the default settings.

oh yeah. I give it a snazzy name. Save it, close it and open it back up again and it's not what I just saved. It's the correct color but the type is always dust and the amount is always 6.4
any suggestions?

oh, and when I open the presets that I just made, they all say dust even when they didn't when I saved them. I give up. I shall go back to Pinnacle.

Not much help, but I get exactly the same problem - looks like a bug report's in order! I wouldn't jump ship just yet though - even with its bugs, VMS has many advantages over Studio!

oh I shouldn't jump ship yet. Just a big sigh. I do love the simplicity of the program.

Melissa,

I think I see the problem. You are selecting "scratches", thinking that you have to choose one effect from "dust", "flicker", "hair", "jitter", and "scratches".

In reality, the "Film Effects" effect has five parameters (dust, flicker, hair, jitter, scratches), and you get to select a value for each one -- you're not choosing just one thing.

If you don't want any "dust" effect, set it to zero. If you want a lot of scratches to appear in the effect, select "scratches" from the drop down list, then use the slider or type a number to adjust the amount. You get to select an amount for each of the five items.

It might be less confusing if it had five separate sliders, always visible -- one for each of these settings, but for some reason this must be an easier way to do it (for the guys writing the software?)

I hope this helps.

By the way, I am very new to all this -- just got VMS 4.0 about 3 months ago -- my first experience with video editing -- but I'm very excited about the improvements in VMS 6. The most exciting improvement so far (for me) is now having keyframes for all the effects and the pan-and-crop, instead of just having start and end points.
