Trying to copy & paste individual events

In 9.0 Version....let's say I take a little 20 second movie event scene, and I want to copy JUST the audio part and paste it somewhere on the track. When I click on that audio part highlighting it, copying it, and paste it somewhere else on the track, it keeps including the video event with it. And when I click on the video event and delete it, it keeps deleting the audio part with it at the same time.

How do I set it up to not group togther like that?

Select the event, make sure that the focus is on the audio track and press U to ungroup. Copy and Paste should then work as you want.
