Why would you want to?

I'd like to turn them off too. Or preferably toggle them. Why? Because the feature seems to indiscriminately tag clips pink even if it's not a synch issue. Vegas seems to tag clips pink whenever the video-audio sequence is altered in any way: L cuts, J Cuts, cuts to insert room tone, etc.

becuse they get in the way of dialog editing

If you open the semi secret internal prefs and seach for "sync" you'll find a tint setting. You can set it at 25 or less to reduce the coloring.

You can also turn off Show Names in Events.

Oh! That turns off the time sync text as well. Good tip!

That would pretty much cover it. Now you just need a button on the toolbar to turn active take names on and off. Personally, I like take names and so far the sync time text hasn't bothered me. It's good to know how to turn it off though.

Toggling active take names on and off by means of a toolbar button has been a wish of mine as well since 3.0. Sometimes I am not interested in the names and the images are just enough.

Depends on whether it can be done with a script. If so, you can place buttons for scripts onto the toolbar.

For all I know there's already a script to do this.

Scripts don't have access to the preferences.
