Tutorial for HD workflow? Proxies?

Can anyone point me to a tutorial for HD editing workflow (Vegas 8)? I'm about to move to HD, but I've been doing most of my editing on an older laptop that barely handles SD editing. I've heard of working on SD "proxies," that might be what I need to do. Thanks.

Gearshift from VASST

I just moved to HDV and do some laptop editing on a single core Dell D400 with 2GB RAM. Gearshift has been a God send tool. Best $50 I spent for editing HDV.
