The first question I don't know.

But the second one Yes it is new to Vegas 9 but there is a workaround that I use but it does change other things the color of other windows. Now this is for Vista it is a little different forf win 7 or XP but you need to right click on the desktop go to - personalize - then window color and appearance - then open classic appearance properties for more color options - then click on the Advanced button - then on the item dropdown click 3D objects and change Color 1 to a darker gray then click ok. Launch Vegas and see if you like the changes if not try a different shade of gray or create a custom color ( that is what I did) Like I said it does make changes on other windows, but I got used to it. Hope that helps.

That is one reason that I want 9 so it will be dark without changing other things.

Thanks for reply, Paul. I use the XP Silver theme with limited tweaks and don't really want to go back to looking like Win95/98 -- or have it affect every other prog I run.

So I'll just wait til VP10 or whatever it will be called comes out :)

On version 8 there you can assign a shortcut key to RENDER AS.

Go to CUSTOMIZE KEYBOARD>GLOBAL>FILE>RENDER AS

hope this helps.

Thanks, Dave, that solved it :)

It's funny when I ask for a question like this (finding a easier-faster way to do something on a computer), there is some subtle over-50 years old guilt:

Ah, we get so spoiled in this computer age requiring instant everything. But older dude self-contempt and kidding aside, it's always nice to spend more time on the important stuff -- such as actual editing.
