Two Camera Color Matching/Correction Help

handleyj wrote on 2/3/2010, 10:07 PM
Hi all,

I'm responsible for editing some footage shot at a local film group's actor showcase. There were two cameras used to shoot the actors, and apparently the camera operators didn't take any pains to sync their settings. And this was a one time event, so we can't go re-shoot it!

Anyway, I've fiddled around in Vegas 8 and 9, trying to get them to match as close as possible, but I'm not very good at it ... mostly just guessing, trial and error. So I was hoping someone here might take up the challenge. I've created a zip file with a .veg inside and two still images, one from each camera. The zip can be downloaded from here:

ccAFM.zip - 3MB

Hopefully someone can email me their .veg file with their color correction settings in place. I don't really care which way you go: match cam1 to cam2 or vis versa. I do think the raw cam2 footage looks better (and looks closer to reality), so matching cam1 to that would be great, but not a requirement.

My email is handleyj -at- hotmail -dot- com

Also, I know there is no way to make them look identical, but if they could just get close enough that cutting between them isn't as painful as it currently is (i.e. cutting between the raw shots).

Thanks so much!

-joe

Joe? Without putting my professional foot in my mouth, you don't have much wrong with these 2 examples that a little Levels correction wouldn't go amiss?

Not in VP9c but n Vegas Plat - yes V Plat! - I did a quick and dirty Levels correction and I was able to bring both closer to each other.

Are you going the colour correction route 'cos of the slight brown-yellow colour cast? Is that it? Well I suppose you could then start futzing with it, it really depends on the look you want for this.

Try Levels first and see what you think.

Grazie mille, Grazie!

I looked at the picture you emailed me, and it is great! Levels ... I never really played much with that plugin, but I think I'll be using it a lot from now on.

Thank you again for the help!

Joe, you are very welcome!

You want the Vegas Plat VF file? It WILL open in VegasPro9 too.

Yes, please! That would be great. You can email it to the same address above.

I had this exact same problem 2 weeks ago. I did the best I could with color correction in Vegas Pro, but it wasn't close enough.

Grazie, I just reinstalled Vplatinum. I don't see any differences between Pro and Platinum in the "levels" FX. I do see an "Auto Levels" in Platinum. Is that what you used?
Thanks,
James

Nope, not here, not in VegPlat6. And BTW, the Auto Levels I have in VP9c is an extra, additional, 3rd Party Plugin created by Mike Crash. And subsequently it would have been remiss of me to instruct a colleague in the use of a plugin that he/she may not possess. So why have you brought up Auto Levels at all?

> " I don't see any differences between Pro and Platinum in the "levels" FX. - Did I say there was? What is the point you are making here?

Best regards

Wow, sorry I asked. Since you told the OP you used V Plat instead of Pro, I thought that you knew about a quicker way to solve this problem using V Plat. I wasn't trying to "MAKE A POINT". I was simply trying to ascertain how you were able to help the OP with this issue.

Have a nice day,
James

Too kind, dear heart, too kind. And yes, I believe I did. It's so nice to be nice these days?

> Since you told the OP you used V Plat instead of Pro, I thought that you knew about a quicker way to solve this problem using V Plat.

Nope, that was your assumption. And as you now say you "thought" I knew of a quicker way. Now, how would I know that those were your thoughts on the matter. Well I wouldn't know, would I. And again, you speak of AutoLevels, is that now packaged with VegPlat?

> I wasn't trying to "MAKE A POINT".

Then why "post"? I don't understand? If you are saying you wanted to find out, which you didn't ask, but if you had, I would have told you.

> I was simply trying to ascertain how you were able to help the OP with this issue.

As I said, by using Levels? Should I have added something more?

Best regards

Grazie

No need to add anything more. It couldn't be more clear if it was a buttonhook in the well water.

I asked the question, "Did you use Auto Levels in Platinum?" To which I not only got the answer, but so much more than I had anticipated. Lucky Me!

I shall not make any more assumptions. Please forgive my impertinence.

Have a nicer day,
James

Could someone please enlighten me...what is V Plat or Vplatinum and how does one go about obtaining it? I have a problem with some footage that has excess yellow hueing. Wondered if this may help me correct it
Thanks

Vegas Platinum. It's the lower end brother to Vegas Pro. If you have Vegas Pro, then you don't need Vegas Platinum (although it sounds like it might have some interesting presets, and such, but I've never used it so I'm not sure about that).

You should probably start a new forum post to discuss your coloring problem. I would post some stills similar to what I did in the original post above.
