.txt confusion

I'm having trouble downloading scripts with a .txt extension. Once saved to my hard drive, I'm unable to save as js script file. Actually, the file is saved as a text file but the name of the file (in explorer) does not have the .txt extension, therefore, I can't remove it to save as a .js file.

How do I convert to a script file? I hope I'm being clear about this.

You need to turn off the "hide file extensions" in Windows Explorer.

Turning off "hide file extensions" is certainly easier than my method.

I would click on the file, say for example, here in a post that included the script, then copy the script and paste into Notepad and then save as a .js file. However this method didn't work if I saved the script to my hard drive first and then tried to copy and paste into a new Notepad file.
