Ulead DVD WS crashes

tadpole wrote on 12/6/2002, 2:07 AM
aware this isn't a sofo product but ulead has no boards (nor any other kind of support)

I have been using demo of Ulead DVD Workshop - with great success.
Few crashes here and there, but it worked.

Now that i shelled out the 300 bucks for the full version - it no longer works!
I uninstalled demo - installed DVDWS 1.0 then updated to 1.3 via patch

I can get DVDWS up and running but it crashes with almost everything i do.
When i click 'burn disc'
i get a page fault in SEPA.DLL

Anyone else having problems with this app?
help!

tadpole, you put it right
"ulead has no boards (nor any other kind of support)"
bad choice then. go to vegas

Ulead DOES have a board that includes DVD WS. The adress is http://news.ulead.com:8080/~Webutilities/login

I am using the full version of DVDWS 1.3 under Windows XP and Windows 2000, and I have not had any problems. However, if you read the Ulead and other boards you'll see lots of people that have problems with the 1.3 update. You might want to uninstall DVDWS and then reinstall 1.0, then patch to 1.2 (if you can find the patch) which is known to be reasonably stable.

Well apparently you if you log in as a guest on the ulead board - it doesn't work.
I registered a username and board came up (very poorly design board if i my add)

It does appear that the 1.3 version screws everything up in Win98se
The demo 1.2 ver WORKED but i cannot seem to restore it - i have uninstalled everything - tried cleaning registery... nada...

Its like ulead released this update and didn't EVEN test it on a win98se machine!
i'm sooo pissed - ALL of my projects i have to get done by xmas are at a shutdown now that i can't burn a damn DVD! grrrrrrrrrr

continuing my rant::::::::; ULEAD techs don't even POST on their boards!!
how ridiculous is that?????

and sqblz - i would LOVE to stay with sofo for my software needs - but they don't make a DVD burning app - hopefully they will put something together before i throw all my money at their competitors

i'll post here if i every find a solution patch to the DVD WS win98SE problem

I have used all the Ulead products as well as MyDVD. In general, Ulead is pretty good. But they do have a problem always generating corect PCM audio on a DVD. I get avalog audio but no audio from the optical output on the Pioneer DVD player. They have been working on fixes for it.

MyDVD works really well and I have not had crashes or bad DVDs made with it.
http://store.sonic.com

It is also available in most stores. Version 3.5 comes with Poineer DVD burners. Version 4 is now available.

Forget about DVD Complete or any software from Dazzle. They have tons of problems and just can't even get your registration serial number right when they ship the packages. Look at the dazzle message board and you'll see they are to be avoided. They are pretty much a non-support company.

Give MyDVD a try. I think you'll like it.

Yeow! I just posted on this general subject "VV to DVD Newbie Stuff" and got couple positive feedbacks on using Unlead. Glad I found this topic. Sounds like I need to be up on XP before I but, If I buy.

Interesting, thanks.

@tadpole,

Ulead product support is all but non-existent. I see samunsend gave you the URL to their forums but you won’t find very many answers from Ulead themselves there. They are a company that won’t even acknowledge the bugs in their product. There was an audio/video sync problem when DVD MovieFactory came out and they denied the problem and told everyone they needed do defrag their hard drive more often. Then magically one day, an audio/video sync patch showed up on their web site. That was the first time they publicly acknowledged the problem.

What would it have been to at least tell customers, “we’re aware of the problem and are working on a fix” instead of having innocent users defragging their hard drives for hours thinking it would help. I lost a lot of respect for them after that. I have several of their products (Cool3D, DVD MovieFactory, & DVD PictureShow) but I would never purchase a Ulead product without using the trial version first to make sure it works on my system.

@jthor,

As stated above, I use DVD MovieFactory and it had few problems in the beginning (a year ago), but its been stable ever since they fixed the audio/video sync problems. I’ve made VCD’s, SVCD’s and DVD’s with it and I’m very happy with it as a simple DVD creation tool but it doesn’t let you control the menu contents and flow. All you get is cascading thumbnail menus. It is not what I would call an “authoring” package because you really don’t get much choice in the flow of the DVD menus. I would recommend DVD MovieFactory if all you want is thumbnail menus with chapter points. For $24.95 boxed direct from their site, it can’t be beat.

If you are interested in making chapters from your Vegas generated mpegs then STAY AWAY from MyDVD v3.x and v4.x! I have a very old version of MyDVD 2.3 and it works great. I use that too sometimes when I want more Hollywood looking DVD’s with a main menu that has, Play, Chapter Selection, and Extras with sub-menus under them. I went to upgrade to MyDVD v3 or v4 but they changed the program entirely and kept the same name! V3 doesn’t support chapters at all and V4 doesn’t support chapters from external files. You must capture your files in MyDVD and then you have to press the space bar (or something) during the capture to create a chapter point or tell it to just create chapter points every 10 minutes during capture. At least this is what I was told when I posted to their forums. If you don’t care about chapters then ignore this message. If you do, then don’t buy MyDVD. (or look for an old copy of v2.3 cheap)

Lajko, perhaps you could comment on this if you own MyDVD 3 or 4. Was I informed correctly? BTW, thanks for the tip on DVD Complete. I was going to look into that based on a glowing review from Videomaker magazine. I should have known better. Videomaker magazine gave Pinnacle Studio 8 a glowing review and the product doesn’t work worth a darn. I can’t trust anything they say which makes the magazine crap for reviews.

You suggested a number of packages not to use, so what are you using? Excellent reminder to be able to test any software you can, especially if it costs hundreds. I am not jumping to this probably till after Christmas, so appreciate comments made at this topic to help me and others out.

I won't go into a lot of details right now, but, you might want to keep Dazzle DVD Complete on your list. It's a nice package for making DVD's. Do a search in this forum. It has been discussed in quite a few threads.

jthor - yes, ULEAD DVD WS is BUGGY as hell, the current 1.3 doesn't work on win 98
and the funny thing is - if you buy it, its probably 1.0 so then you have to upgrade, and the only available upgrade is 1.3 (no 1.2)

so u r screwed if ur on win98

and apparently - what i just read from a few posts over at the ulead forum - the 1.3 patch link is even down - WITH ZERO COMMENT FROM ULEAD

bottom line - if you can get it to work - its probably the best (as in design flexablity) out there for your $$ (((so i say - i highly dislike MyDVD))

so don't discount it

and why not give it a try! they have a 30day 1.2 version demo.
(or at least they did it up??)

if not, i can email it to you

I have a copy of the 1.2 patch for DVD Workshop that I can email to you. Let me know.

ok...my two cents..

1. i've been using ulead products for a few years now. most of the stuff is good.
2. i've got dvd workshop 1.3 and have little or no issues.
3. ulead is in taiwan, so that explains the lack of communications.
4. why the heck are you using win98 to do this? that could be one problem.

HAYWIRE - that would be sweet!

However - here's the deal.
after a total uninstall (like dumped everything ulead from my system and registry
I reinstalled a the 1.2 version - BUT of course, the 30-day trial expired.

Found a little hack-patch that removes the expiration.
Not able to use motion-background, background music, and limited to 20 chaps per vid file - BUT.. i can get it to burn a disc at least.

SO - for now i don't wanna risk losing burning ability - if i don't see a win98 1.4 patch on ulead any the next few weeks, i might take you up on that offer HAYWIRE!
thanks!

All I need is your email address, but I have to agree with Craig. Why are you using Windows 98? Get a copy of XP, format your drives to NTFS, and you'll be much happier. The system restore feature alone is worth the upgrade.

I have Windows 98 SE. I used DVD Workshop Trial Version with no problems. I ordered the program. I got version 1.0. Upgraded to Version 1.3. It would not load long MPEG files. Tried to go back to version 1.2. It was not available. Contacted ULEAD and got an address to download version 1.2. Loaded 1.2 and had a problem with error burning files. I went back to version 1.0 and it is working fine. Guess I will stick with version 1.0 for now.
