Ultimate PC Build for Stability Advice

GFM wrote on 3/27/2024, 3:25 AM

Good day Gurus,

Sorry if this is the wrong subforum for this.

I was getting too many crashes before my PC finally bought the farm, and am now looking to spend more money on the best possible PC build for stability. I mainly use Vegas Pro 18, and wish to update to Vegas Pro 21. I often have to have Vegas Pro, Adobe Lightroom, and at least 10 open tabs on Firefox open at the same time to do my work. I also operate on a 3 monitor set up.

From asking my friends who are into building PCs, they have suggested this list. May I ask for input on this? Especially with respect to which graphics card to buy and also how much RAM to get.

Intel i5-14600K (3Yr)
Gigabyte Z790 UD AX (3Yr)
PowerColor HellHound RX7600XT 16GB GDDR6 (3Yr)
Adata XPG Lancer RGB PC6000 32GB CL30 Kit
WD Black SN850X 2TB Gen 4  (7300MB/S) M.2 SSD (5Yr)
Toshiba N300 10TB HDD (3Yr)
Corsair  4000D TG Mid Tower
SeaSonic Focus GX-750 PSU (10Yr)
MS Windows 11 Pro 64Bit

Thank you!

Looks like a solid system. Personally I'd go with 64GB and not have to upgrade later. My own similar system is in my signature and I use the same software and browser as you.

Stability is better with two ram sticks rather than 4 so 64GB would be 2 x 32

@GFM you ask for stability, then if possible spend a bit more on a higher powered (say 1000 W) and cleaner Power supply brand and model, your proposed model has issues:

from Tom's hw verdict: Cons:

- 3.3V transient response

- Noisy under rough conditions

- Bulky ATX, EPS and PCIe cables

- Found lots of long component leads on the main PCB

- Short distance between peripheral connectors

- 5VSB efficiency should be higher

A new PC (I just got a i9-14900K setup - see signature) won't necessarily make Vegas 18 (or 21) more stable. You still have to configure Vegas to get the best performance from your graphics card. However, I'm experiencing better stability with the current version of Vegas Pro 21 (208) over any previous released updates (v16..v21). I've been editing and rendering 4K-60FPS raw GoPro video (no proxies) with no issues. However, the new setup should allow a smoother editing experience with less dropped frames in preview.

That's a sweet setup!

Sorry to barge into this thread, But I can't seem to find the Button Or link Or icon that will let me create a new Thread.

I've tried and tried from my phone and from two different laptops and desktops, And there doesn't seem to be any new post or new thread option. Sorry to be such a noob, But if I can figure out how to do that then I won't need to glom on to other people's threads.

Thanks

Steve

Thank you Bitman, those are important considerations! Is there an alternative you would recommend?

Thank you Hamilton53! I was considering i9 but that would really be stretching my budget. However I also want to consider long term because I've tried to save money in the past and then ended up with more problems as the system deterioriated with increasing demand.

I will definitely follow the recommendations i've seen on various threads here for the Vegas Pro configuration, but in terms of the CPU itself, is there any really good reason to go from i5 to i9? or what about going up just a bit to i7?

Also I found your comment about dropped preview frames illuminating. As a noob, I couldn't quite understand why my previews kept going back to half resolution even if I kept choosing the highest resolution for preview possible!

Best regards!

Personally I went with an i5 over an i9 to avoid the excessive power, heat and cost of that part that largely exists to win best CPU awards. But if you are willing to deal with all of that it is faster... though if you have budget limits putting the differential into a GPU would yield better VEGAS performance.

See the two benchmarks in my signature for an idea of performance differences (you can go to view and sort by only Intel CPU for example). My own i5 13th gen is there.

There are lists of PSUs tiers- I consulted those before selecting the one I did.

Thank you RogerS! I completely forgot to consider power requirements, showing what a noob I am to this!

@GFM I was also new to it- have only built one computer in my life. I would use PCPartpicker which can help ensure compatibility between components and also estimate power usage. Leave headroom for transient high power draws for a GPU. My power supply is overspeced for what I needed as I planned to upgrade the GPU at some point.

@GFM Recommendations for a PS: corsair HX...i series never let me down so far, i have the 1500 watt variant (I would have preferred a 1200W variant for my system, but they were not available at the time I put my system together), but you do not have to go that high with your setup in mind (in your case I would go for a corsair HX1000i), anyway the price difference between each variant is not that high which would prohibit getting a higher wattage variant. The advantage of a higher wattage variant in case of that Corsair series is that the fan speed curve inside the power supply will be according the power draw and will only spin if the power draw is a certain level, so it is more silent, so a higher wattage power supply will start spinning later than a lower wattage power supply. So a higher rated power supply will make less noise (and can handle powers pikes better)!

Thanks again bitman! I think the HX1000i is plenty for my needs! I'm getting that.
