unable to capture video

When I insert my card reader in the USB port it is recognized immediately by my camera software and ready to transfer. But when I try to capture video in Vegas it says please connect a device. Not seeing my card reader for some reason. I tried the device explorer and it's not showing up there either. Not sure where to go from here. Searched forum and found nothing. I know I can transfer over in other software and then bring it into Vegas but would much rather streamline and do all in Vegas
Thanks

Hello Phil:

The "Capture" utility is for capturing HDV and DV video on tape, not from a memory stick, memory card, or hard drive.

I have HDV so I know a lot about that process, but I don't know much about memory cards/disks. Having said that, I think you can use your Windows explorer to view the files on the memory card and just drag 'em into a folder on your computer hard drive. After that you can use the Explorer in VMS to find them and double-click to add them to your timeline.

Within VMS, I believe you can also select Project/Import Media and that will take you to an Explorer window. Once there you can enter the path for your memory card and bring the files over.

Does your computer see the memory card when it's in your camera? Or do you have a card reader or cardbus where you can insert the memory card so the computer can read it? If your computer can read your memory card, you should be able to get them into VMS. Hope that helps.

I should have mentioned that I tried capturing direct from the camera as well with the same result. No device detected

Thank You Kimberly. I wasn't aware of this. Yes I am able to transfer media to my hard drive and import into VMS just fine.
Thanks again.
