There is an icon that looks like an elongated "x" -- click that and it will open the transition properties window. You can also right-click on the transition and choose "Transition Properties."

I'm guessing that you're zoomed out pretty far (in time). Zoom into the transition location, and you'll see it just fine.

Make sure your two clips overlap a little then drag the transition to the overlap area. You can adjust the length of the transition somewhat by increasing or decreasing the amount of overlap, as well. This may seem obvious but I'm new to VV, too.

You read the manual <g>.

You press the up arrow or use your mouse wheel. There are also button to the right of the horizontal scroll bar, or you can grab the edges of the horizontal scroll thumb. There's probably another six way I can't think of right now.

But, they are all in the manual and the help. They are really worth reading, even seasoned experts learn something new when they do.
