Unable to Render to QT6 (V5)

Yesterday I had a need to render a project out to Quicktime. No problem (I thought). When I choose the Quicktime 6 option, it says "No existing templates support this media.".

I realized that I hadn't upgraded to Quicktime 6, so went to Apple and installed the newest version (6.5 I believe). Still no luck. Reboot. Still no luck.

I checked my laptop and it does have the QT 6 templates. Strange.... What do I need to do to get these templates onto my main machine?

Did you do a custom install and pick everything? Especially the Authoring Tools?

I don't think I did "custom", but I'm not 100% positive. I checked the other templates and it looks like everything else is in order. Any idea how to get it back?

I've looked for differences between the files in the "FileIO Plug-Ins" folder on the laptop & desktop but don't see any (but both have folders named "qt5plug" - a reference to QT 5 which doesn't show as a rendering option on either box.

Install quicktime again. This time choose "Custom" and pick EVERYTHING.

I recall a prior thread (a while ago) where Sony said that although it says QT5 you do in fact have access to the QT6 codecs. I had no way to verify this... so I have been working on the assumption that it is correct.

Thanks - I've been out of touch for a few days. Reinstalled QT and all is well!

This same problem drove me absolutley nuts a few months ago, going round and round from install to reinstal.

then someone suggested the pathname to the folder to which I was rendering was too long (a QT naming limitation). Turned out even a folder on my desktop had too long a name for QT.

Try rendering to the root directorywith a short pathname.

Yes, Vegas 5 requires QuickTime 6.

Yes, watch out for long pathnames in your renders to QuickTime. If you use your "My Documents" folder for your renders, this usually translates to C:\Documents and Settings\<username> so if you have nested folders in your render path, you can see how easily you can reach the 55 character limit imposed by Apple. Actually the limit is 51 characters because ".tmp" is appended by the QT6 plug-in to create a temporary file during the render process.

N.B.: If you click the About button for QuickTime 6 in the Vegas 5 Render As dialog, it tells you what version of QuickTime you have installed on your computer.

SonyTSW, Here's the minimum system requirements as listed in the Vegas 5 readme:

Is the readme incorrect???

I had a problem rendering to Quicktime. The Quicktime template had "none" specified for Video Format. This caused DVDA to run forever then crash. I found thet I had to go into custom and specify a video format and then all rendered fine.

widetrack,

The QT plug-in in Vegas 5 is checking for a 55 character limit, not 51 characters like it should be doing. This will be fixed in the next update.

As a result, render file paths that are between 52 to 55 characters are allowed for the render, but it will fail during the render. So be careful for now about your file path lengths.

jetdv,

No the QuickTime requirements are incorrect, QuickTime version 6 is required. I'll bring it to the attention of the documentation team, thanks!

wobblyboy,

Were you using the default template? Rendering from Vegas 5, and reading the file into DVDA 2? Did your project contain audio and video media?

Please provide some more information so we can try to reproduce the problem here.

Please forgive me while I jump into this thread ....

But, I've got my V5 upgrade setting in a box and I'm chomping at the bit and waiting for an answer from support, so maybe one of you can help out?

Using V4, I'm unable to generate a QT .mov that correctly "fast start" for HTTP streaming. What I've been doing is generating an uncompressed AVI, then using QT 6.5 PRO to convert it to a .mov. That gives me a correctly working "fast start". My current issue (I think) is that I've rendered an uncompressed AVI that is too large for QT. QT is convinced that it contains video only, though WMP will correctly identify the video and audio.

So, to my question ... Does anyone know if V5 correctly implements "fast start" so that I can render directly to QT .mov?

TIA,

Dianne
