Grazie wrote on 8/23/2004, 3:55 AM
I know all the others undock - However, I've just seen Tim Duncan talk to me about setting up V5 Workspaces. He's got his Edit Details ABOVE his T/L! How'd he do that?

Oh the Class on Demand Ist Chapter is FREEE for a time limited period . . hmmm... the rest looks yummy! . . Tim just loooove that Southern accent! It is from the SOuth - yes? . . Might just buy the DVD to hear your voice . . neato ! . . .Ahem! .. Nicley put together Edward/Tim . . straightforward . .that was the 1st chapter?

Anyway, how do you get Edit Details above and docked with the Timeline? Please?

BEst regards . .Y'all!

Grazie

You have to reduce size of your Vegas (middle button / top right : those two squares instead of "full page") then stretch it to your needs/preferences.
Needless to say, you have to undock all the bottom windows and drag those to the top to "make room" to your TimeLine at the bottom.

I spread my timeline on two screens with Vegas and Acid so I don't have to scroll so many times left and right...

That reminds me of a story.
A director came to my home and was complaining that Vegas looked like an "amateur" NLE to her. Why? I asked. Then I got a reality check a few of other guys had here;
being so much used to Avid, she couldn't consider this app a "serious one" with pictures in the clips, waves in audio tracks, so many colors, etc...
Next thing I do when she's gone? I "mold" Vegas into different "presentations", thanks to the workspace presets. I record a special one reminding Avid; no animations in clips (both audio and video), details of clips on timeline into events, a dark grey UI (right clip on desktop...), and T/L at the bottom, details at the top and on second screen, the scopes and trimmer window at the bottom. I also "faded" the colors of UI. On demand, I was ready to "expand" tracks so there's no crossfades on the same line but on two different lines stacked on top of other. Just like in the "big league"...
Next time she visited, I just hit alt+D and "0" and there we were: into a "serious" NLE... more: I popped up three more "presentations" all differently configured, just for fun. I told her I preffered doing "research" through stockshot with one config while editing audio was easier with this other config, etc... different configs for different needs all into the same app.
And ,indeed, now I had fun...!

Update: I got a solution but it has it's drawbacks: flip your monitor! hahahaa!
Aaaah, ok, just kidding Grazz...

can do it by going into the internal preference and change frame dock at top to true.

Grazie, why not just ask Tim directly on the DMN forum?

Grazie,
if you go into Internal preferences and change the docking setting to "TRUE" as FuTz suggests, you'll be able to put the timeline on the bottom (it will default to there) and allow your docks to be up top. The timeline itself doesn't have a dock.
You can also put the timeline on the left monitor and the dock tools on the right, Tim does this a lot at trade events, but since I'm so used to working right/left, I have to switch it around to left right rather than right/left.

And in case you missed it, to get to Internal Prefs, open the Options menu, hold down the shift key, and select "Preferences". This adds the "settings o' death" tab to the prefs (aka "Internal"). In this panel you can change all sorts of things that will make Vegas nearly unusable.
In the text box at the bottom type in "top". You'll see three prefs. The important one is "Frame Dock at the Top". Set it to "true". click "OK".
Thanks to Rob Mack on the DMN forum for this.

Thanks guys . .BUT!

What he's got is a type of Veggie Sandwich !

1 - Edit Detail View at the TOP - Upper slice of bread!

2 - Timeline - MIDDLE - Sandwiched-filling

3 - Trimmer - BOTTOM - Lower slice of bread!

Yes, in know the one about thre Internal Prefs .. it is neat. But what I saw on his CoD DVD is the above. It really looks as if he has "de-docked" the timeline! Honest! That's why I'm asking the question and that is why I can't figure it out ! ! ! I can only think that the lower trimmer Option AINT docked but just " f l o a t i n g "

Does anybody understand what I mean?!?

Grazie,

It's really very simple. Make the MAIN Vegas 5 window SMALLER so that it does not go to the top of the screen. Undock the Edit Details window and position it in the area ABOVE the main Vegas 5 window. Done.

That's just pulling the timeline down, and docking outside the window, not unlike working with a dual monitor setup.

Thanks - Yes - dunnit - that is simpler than it looks. G
