Unlimited Media imports

manny-g wrote on 7/28/2023, 5:48 PM

Has anyone ever tried to import hundreds of media files into their "Project Media Tab" only to discover that Vegas times out and crashes? If your hard drive can easily store the Video files then shouldn't Vegas software be able to import them lol? I'm not trying to edit and render every single file on my drive but I'd like to see what I have by importing my entire collection without Vegas crashing. My RAM isn't even close to being used up and my processor can easily handle the import but the Hard drive seems to struggle even though it's a SSD...? Any suggestions would be helpful

Thanks

No

"Any suggestions would be helpful"

  • Stop by planet Earth on your next orbit.
  • Sort your media by date shot or date created in Windows Explorer. Sort into folders by day, month or year. Pick a quantity that is a bit more reasonable and work in on that unit to characterize the media.

I wouldn't expect to throw all of the tens of thousands of media files that I've created on a Vegas timeline just to see what they are.

There may be something in there that isn't a proper or compatible media file. I've imported hundreds of clips and thousands of pictures (for a time lapse) without issue.

If there are veg projects or other things in the folders you can run into issues.

When you go on vacation, do you pack everything you have or just the things you need? Your house (hard drive) can store a lot, but not your suitcase (Vegas).

There is one basic flaw to your idea: Vegas is not a player.

A nonlinear editor, including Vegas, must decompress your video to native bits, which occupy 5 to 10 times their reported size. Your combined RAM and Virtual Memory can't come close to being able to hold the volume of data you have just thrown at it.

There is a Windows Search feature that will display all of the video files on a drive in one place, where you can preview them in a player, one at a time until you're exhausted, if you wish.

This information is commonly available with a Google search:

I don't get it. Are you saying the old hard drive was failing?

manny-g wrote on 7/31/2023, 11:34 AM

@RogerS The SSD I originally had was malfunctioning and was unable to process the media files. You also might want to consider updating your dll's in the direct software of Vegas Pro for example. C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 11.0\FileIO Plug-Ins\mcplug2.....mc_demux_mp2.dll was causing problems in one of my dilemmas.

Cheers!

@john_dennis I'm not sure how to take you at times and in fact you almost come off as being

condescending towards me personally. I understand you might think you have all the answers to everything but has it ever occurred to you that not all cases have a quick, easy fix? Maybe you should try to be a little more friendly and helpful in trying to solve other peoples problems. Have a good day wiseguy

I wouldn't touch the dlls VEGAS uses to decode media.

mark-y wrote on 7/31/2023, 8:59 PM

If you will right-click on the Media and select Properties, you will see the Decoder in use. The decoded stream is what you see in the media preview as well as the timeline preview (output).

It would be nice if nonlinear editors decoded in real time and fudged over stream and GOP errors the way a player like VLC does. Unfortunately, the state of the art is just not there yet, and that may be what is causing your expectations.

@manny-g Hi, the Vegas Explorer tab has a play button also, why would you want to add hundreds to the Project Media tab if you're only looking to see what you have.?

PS, would you alter the info in your Profile, Copy& paste the info about your PC from About Me to My Signature so it shows at the bottom of your comments.ta.
