unsolvable 'unloaded' problem solved

Hi,

I have a Dell XPS with 2GB ram and an NVIdia Go 7800 video card. No problems in the hardware space. I am on Win XP2 and i am attempting to capture from my HDR
HC1 to Vegas Movie Studio + DVD Platinum.

I have been using vegas for over a month now with no problems at all with capturing.

I then install DVRACK to check out how well you can live capture footage from a HDV camera.. works great. A day later i attempt to capture again some more footage from a tape, i plugged in the camera and nothing happens. The system recognises the camera in some way as it makes the device connection sound and then requests which method i would like to use to capture video with either sony vegas or windows movie maker.

I choose vegas as that is the tool that will capture hdv as i only shoot in hdv.

The camera is either there and i cant get it to capture and after a while i get the 'unloaded' message or the 'device is not connected message'

If i unplug the camera and plug in there is no change.

I have tried everything.

On dvinfo forum someone noted that if you reinstall the drivers through device manager it gets it going again... funny thing is is that the device is not there sometimes and when it is and i do it it only works for a moment in another programs (HDVSplit).

When i attempt to capture via HDV split it works for two seconds and then stops stating capture finished and there is no data actually captured.

I found another forum where you are told to roll back the drivers to those found in SP1 because it states that SP2 sometimes has functionality issues with cameras. I tried that too and nothing changed. I then rolled back the drivers to SP2.

I did a system restore to a month ago and again no change. This is beginning to irritate me because I have spent so much time and money on this and i have a doco sitting on a tape i can do nothing with until i get it dumped to my computer.

No programs are seeing it properly and it suddenly doesnt work. Is there something i am missing here?

Exactly HOW are you trying to capture this in Vegas??

HDV needs to be captured using the Internal capture utility. I suspect Windoz might direct you to the External capture utility (VidCap). VidCap seems to try to work sort of sometime with HDV but doesn't as it's not designed to.
To capture HDV, start Vegas, Capture Video, select Internal.

I am using the Vegas internal capture utility. It worked only a few days ago and now does not. Weird or there is something i am just not getting.

Possibly stupid question(s).
Try new firewire cable, the cheap ones can be very unreliable.
Is the camera/VCR in HDV mode, not downconvert, lost count of the number of times that's caught people out.

I would do this, in order:

1-reboot machine
2-turn camera off
3-plug in firewire cable (do not use USB)
4-turn camera on in the Playback mode
5-make sure camera is set to download HDV, not DV, format. The manual should say how
6-if Windows launches the plug-n-play program selector, close it out, do not pick anything
7-launch Vegas
8-in vegas, select File\Capture video
9-in the dialog box that pops up, select "Use internal capture application"
10-HDV capture utility should launch
11-Click the Capture Video button to start capturing

Let us know if any error messages pop up and on which step.

Hi,

Kicking self.

WARNING TO EVERYONE THAT USES VEGAS AND GETS THE 'UNLOADED' MESSAGE AND IS PUZZLED. It is highly likely that if you are attempting to capture a clip that you THINK is HDV that is probably DV.

The Vegas HDV capture program will not work with it! It only makes sense. Be sure to check the output on your camcorders screen to see what format the clip is in and use the appropriate capture method.

It appears that i had created one clip in DV format at the start of the tape.

I wasn't noticing this fact on the screen till i read the line above:

5-make sure camera is set to download HDV, not DV, format. The manual should say how

I feel foolish.

The OTHER problem you could be having if you have the "unloaded" message is that your Mpeg 2 codec did not install when you first installed.

This was my case. I simply took a file and choose to convert to Mpeg2 and then the dialog box to registar the codec came up. The program contacted the site and unlocked the codec.

I went to capture a file in HD and viola, it worked!
