Using DVDit PE to author DVDs, I rendered a video to .m2v and the audio to .wav (using the standard 48k, 16 bit, stereo option). DVDit complains that the wav file has an "unsupported number of channels". Any idea why DVDit would not like the VV wave file?
If you bring that WAV into Vegas, and look at media properties, under "Stream" you only get "Audio 1" and NOT "Audio 2", right? If you're seeing more than 1 audio stream, that's the problem (if so, you're using "multiple mono" or "multiple stereo" WAV rendering.

Uh, yea, you're right, multiple mono & multiple stereo make separate files. I was thinking of an AVI feature that could create multiple streams of audio in one file, and wanted to make sure that isn't what was happening. But, as you point out, with WAV, separate files are made.
Seems like a perfectly ordinary WAV file based on those stats. I have no idea why DVDit PE is not liking it. I assume you have no problems with WAV files from other sources? What are the properties of those files, and does anything differ?
One thought is that DVDit PE is expecting a mono file; perhaps it's in a mode to import multiple mono files instead of stereo files? Perhaps it's looking for 5.1 surround audio in multiple mono files (does DVDit PE even do surround, I don't know).
Otherwise, as far as the file itself, I'm not sure what could be strange about this WAV file, and I'm not aware of any other applications that can't read Sonic Foundry WAV files. I assume it plays in Media Player?
The only other thing I can think of is perhaps having marker/region metadata in the file is confusing DVDit PE. Try rendering the WAV file again, and in the Save As dialog, make sure "Save project markers in media file" is OFF.
If that doesn't fix it, try loading the WAV file up into a WAV editor (such as Sound Forge or SF XP) and saving it.
Yes, DVDit PE has been working with WAV files from Cinestream. I will have to do some research to see the stats of those files. I will post once I get a chance to pull up the same information of one of those files.
DVDit PE definitely wands a stereo file. I DOES convert the files to Dolby but does NOT handle 5.1.
Yes, the files play in other pieces of software and even PLAY in DVDit PE. It is only when telling it to create the DVD Folder that it reports this error message.
I didn't set any markers or regions prior to rendering (at least not purposely) however I did leave the checkbox marked. I will have to try it again with the checkbox unmarked to see if that does make a difference.
I DID try reloading in Goldwave and then resaving it which did not fix the problem. However, I did not do extensive research for this option.
I DO appreciate you answering me and will continue to try some of these other possibilities.
So far, I haven't been able to get DVDIt PE to accept any wav files at all. Even the silly system sounds from the WINDOWS directory give it heartburn.
As a workaround, I saved the audio track in question as an MPEG-1 audio-only file from VV. In the Render As dialog, choose MPEG-1, hit Custom, turn off the video stream, and adjust the properties on the Audio tab for what you need. DVDIt seems quite happy with the results.
Just be aware that NTSC DVD players are not *required* to play MPEG-1 audio streams. Many do, however, but the spec says they only have to play PCM and Dolby Digital (at least in 2 channels and/or bitstream output to receiver).
Are you making sure your .wav files are converted to 48Khz sampling rate. DVDit will not accept 44.1Khz .wav files which unless you convert them is what your silly system sounds are. It will not convert them itself.
You are OK adding .mpa files with DVDit but they will be converted to PCM or AC-3 because of the reasons SonicDennis has pointed out with NTSC compatability. It will just not allow output of MPEG audio.

PCM and DD are the only options available in the DVDIt audio output settings. It claims to be "transcoding" other audio formats into one of the required formats. My DVD player reports the results as being DD 2.0 Stereo.

I tried it with both 48kHz and 44.1kHz, and got the same message. You'd like to think that the message would have complained about sampling rate rather than number of channels if that was the issue.
yes I have been able to use .wav files from VV3 in DVDit.
With my project loaded I just created a .m2v video only stream from the timeline & a 48Khz stereo .wav file after that. Both load fine in DVDit and disc authored without any errors. No special settings for the .wav file just as per .wav template and made sure it was 48Khz.
