unwanted audio clipping at end of track

I inserted an MP3 file into the audio track. When I clip or cut a few seconds away from the begining of that track, it also results in cutting the same amount of time form the end of that same track. What is confusing, is that it doesn't look like I cut it. You can still see the audio peaks and valleys, but all of a sudden the audio just cuts out. The audio cut out effects both the preview and if I render the track.

Has anyone else run into this issue?

I've occasionally had that problem with a few purchased MP3 files, or M4A files converted to MP3, but never with any i created myself. The work-around i've been doing is to render the entire MP3 file into a new WAV file, then use that WAV file in my project.
