Is this the original project or did you rip the DVD?

I've experienced this issue when trying to edit off of external USB drives in Vegas. If I transfer the project to my internal drive the problem goes away.

It's original.
I did it a few months ago. Installed a new HD since then and reinstalled Vegas on it.

I am editing off an external HD.. but havn't experienced this with other projects. I'll try moving it over and see. Don't understand why though.

I havn't had a chance to move the files yet, but this is frustrating and annoying. I just opened the file on a whim to try and render a quick web version. Worked FINE. No white noise and it's posted. Closed file...came back 20 minutes later to do the same for the next song...noise returns. Always in the same places. This makes me think...maybe it is a bad connection or cable ?

The files are stored (with all of my other footage) on an external Seagate drive and I render to and from there. I will try, as suggested, to move then to the C drive and see if that works.

I currently have an SSD drive as my C and external for file storage. It was suggested that I get another SSD drive to work and render from.

I use an SSD for my C drive and an internal set of software raided drives to work from. SSD should work nicely. I have also had the USB drives sometimes work but then they don't I get the really loud and random white noise.

Well I moved files over today and seems to be fine. It's funny.. the problem was the most annoying type of problem...Intermitant. THis is the only file I've encountered it on and it wasn't constant. The only constant is it seems the noise always happened in the same spots.

Possibly due to buffer sizes relating to the Win USB file subsystem, and glitches in the streaming of data, and the (Win) signalling of buffer condition.

Or something like that .....

In my experience external drives good for backups, but maybe not for 'our' sort of things.

geoff

Yeah.. that's inline with what I was thinking. As soon as i can afford it I'm switching to an internal for all working files.

I've never had a problem with using external hard drives (not flash drives) for editing, even with HD footage, as long as the external drives were 7200rpm or better. This usually means a drive with its own AC power cable. If your external drive only has a USB cable and no AC power cable, it's probably only a 5400rpm drive, and that could be problematic.

Internal is even better, of course. :-)

Neither have I. And it seems to only happen on this particular file. Never the less... I need the space anyway. I figure a Samsung EVO850 250gb should do fine. I can get those for about $89. Then I can keep all present and recent projects on it and maybe even unplug and swtore the external. Only pull it out for back ups and archiving. I've always been just a little bit nervous leaving it pulged in and running 24/7.

It could be a heavily fragmented hard drive with file split into many blocks across the disk making it difficult to read.
