The update, like previous VF updates, is actually the whole program (minus the "integrated" MyDVD DVD authoring program).

Therefore, if you reinstall the program later, you don't have to install the version off the CD first* - just install the update.

*You do have to install MyDVD off the CD since it is not included in the update.

So can someone from Sony please explain why we can't have this as the VF2 to 3 upgrade?

I'm not quite sure I follow.

Are you asking why there isn't a free update from VF 2 to MS3?

Or does this have something to do with the lack of a "download" purchase option for MS3?

I just got the Movie Studio 3.0 and when I click "check for update" It says I have teh most current version. So what about 3.0a ??

It's the latter. The postage to anywhere outside the US is something like $45, which is a bit OTT for a $30 upgrade.
