After working through portions of the audio plugs issues I have been dealing with, I did go back and try to get Vegas to crash in the AC3Pro rendering menu, which it had been doing reliably before.
Since checking the Win7 compatibility mode box in Properties for Vegas, it does not now crash before during or after. This SEEMS (i.e., the Win7 compatibility fix) to have been the complete answer for this one. I will do more checks on this with video renders, etc.
I was also slightly more cautious after the render was done, and waited until the GRaid drive was not blinking at all before trying to close the project, but even this seemed like a shorter time period than before.
As a precaution, I have gone to every other icon on my desktop and clicked Win7 compatibility for every other program as well.
