Upgrade to Vegas Pro

I noticed a forum thread over on the Vegas Pro forum for a special upgrade deal on Vegas Pro 9: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=686645

However it looks like the upgrade price also applies to Vegas Movie Studio, which makes it an amazing deal for VMS users! Check out the 'Purchase' - 'Upgrades' link, it seems to show the same price for upgrading from VMS as it does for Vegas Pro.

I don't think it applies to any "Movie Studio" version .. only the Pro version, or older professional versions.

The text on the webpage says: "Upgrade any professional version of Vegas (Vegas Pro, Vegas Audio, or Vegas Video, Vegas, or Vegas+DVD) to Vegas Pro 9."

That's true, but if you look on the 'Upgrades' page, under 'Upgrade to Vegas Pro 9 from Vegas Movie Studio' it is listed at £90.95, the same as the Vegas Pro upgrade.

It might be a mistake, but it seems to accept my VMS serial number on the order screen.

Thought it was worth a mention, in case anyone wanted to try it...

Paul I couldn't find it just now, might have been a mistake. How did you link it again ?

Cheers.

It even includes DVD Architect Pro!!

However, since it's a "Promotional Price", I wonder if we'd be able to buy Vegas Pro 10 for the "upgrade" price when ever it comes out?

My understanding of the way the licencing works, is once you've upgraded, you own the same version of Vegas Pro as anyone else - doesn't matter how you got there, so I think the future upgrades would be the normal Pro - Pro pricing.

Hi guys, I saw that upgrade link but it says purchase for $484.95 with no upgrade price. Do you mean you have to enter your VMS serial to see the $90.95.

I'm in Australia, maybe it's only available in the US at present, anyone in Europe see it?
Cheers.

Canada here....

I also see the US$484.95 for the download. I put my serial # in, and the price didn't change.

USA here. I tried my various "Studio" version serial numbers and the price didn't change. On the other hand, my versions are Screenblast 3 and Video Factory 1 & 2. Maybe they are too old to be recognized.

Price should show up without entering serial number.

I've just changed my prefs to United States and the VMS Upgrade price is showing as USD149.

Took a screen grab: http://www.homemovieediting.co.uk/images/VMSUpgrade.jpg

This is confusing... I own Vegas Pro 8 as well as VMS 4 and VMS 6. I got the email from Sony to upgrade from Vegas to Vegas Pro 9 for $149.95, and clicking the link in the email showed that pricing as well. But I think when I was checking earlier I was seeing regular pricing.

From the forum (while I was logged in) I clicked on My Account >> Software link in the black bar at the top of the page. The page it opens shows all your registered software and those "Upgrade" links at the bottom of the page showed regular (expensive) pricing. I clicked on those links and the pages they opened up continued to show regular upgrade prices -- even though my qualifying serial number was shown on each page.

Then in another tab I opened the forum and clicked on the Purchase >> Upgrades link in the black title bar at the top of the page. That page shows little pictures of the boxes of a whole bunch of Sony products and the Upgrade to Vegas Pro 9 from both Vegas and from VMS were showing the $149.95 promotional price! Clicking on the "Add to Cart" links for each continued to show the $149.95 -- even without my serial number entered.

And finally, I went back to the My Account >> My Softare and it was showing the regular pricing on that page, but clicking on the Buy Now link brought up pages that showed the $149.95 price for each.

So, click around in every way possible. For a while I know I wasn't seeing the discounted prices -- just the regular prices. I don't know if clicking on the email link generated a cookie or something, but I am indeed seeing a $149.95 price to upgrade from VMS to Vegas Pro 9.

I've never seen such a low price to upgrade from VMS to Vegas Pro -- this really is an outstanding deal for VMS users.

Okay, I went to another computer without the promotional email and everything I tried would only show the normal (expensive) pricing. I went back to the computer with the email and noticed the "keycode" in the URL that provides the discount (it does not seem to be tied into your actual user account).

Try this link for some upgrade joy:

So, how do I qualify for the promotional keycode? I have a registered copy of Sony Movie Studio Platinum 8 yet have received no email offer.

I'm pretty sure the keycode is by promotion, not by customer. Everyone gets the same keycode for the Vegas upgrade. Now, you can only use it if you have a qualifying serial number though.

Looks like they've fixed the error which allowed upgrades from VMS. TLF posted on the Vegas Pro forum that he was able to upgrade from VMS, I wonder if anyone else was able to grab a bargain while it was available?
mixxer wrote on 12/21/2009, 10:53 AM
OK. So, what determines a 'qualifying serial number'?
Chienworks wrote on 12/21/2009, 11:32 AM
There's two criteria for "qualifying serial number"

1) it has to be yours and you haven't used it for any other upgrades.

2) it has to apply to the upgrade deal.

#1 is easy enough for you to know. #2 is a policy set up case by case for each upgrade deal by Sony.

So apparently in this case Sony intended to only qualify serial numbers from the "full" version of Vegas, but accidentally allowed a few to use their "studio" version serial numbers. This may or may not have been fixed. One way to find out is to try to purchase the upgrade. It won't cost you anything to find out. Either you get the discounted price in your shopping cart or you don't. Either way, you still get to decide whether you want to buy it or not after you see the price.
mixxer wrote on 12/21/2009, 1:17 PM
Tried the upgrade link but it looks as though it has been 'fixed'. Price has gone from £90 to £336. I don't see why I should pay £336 when others can get it for £90 so I won't bother upgrading at all.
Chienworks wrote on 12/21/2009, 1:39 PM
I first got into the Pro version (well, back then it was just Vegas) when version 3 was released. There was an initial 30 day special sale, and anyone could buy it for about $200, including DVD Architect, even if you weren't upgrading. You can probably get a similar deal when Vegas Pro 10 comes out*.

*And no, i have no idea when that might be.

It's been FIXED alright!! $499.95 USD now. I'm bummed.

Really bummed, not only will I not be able to "open" a new version of VMS in a couple days, now I can't upgrade at a *reasonable* price.
colinu wrote on 12/22/2009, 8:30 AM
I was able to "purchase" it yesterday morning. However, my order status says that it is still being processed.
Tim L wrote on 12/22/2009, 3:30 PM
Yeah, I guess it looks like the VMS to Vegas upgrade for $149.95 was an unintentional mistake on Sony's part -- I guess they didn't intend to offer an upgrade deal like that to VMS users. (It pretty much *was* too good to be true.)

Still, I hope some people were able to take advantage of it. Sorry to get people's hopes up...
