Upgraded from Vegas Pro 16 to Vegas Pro 20 and it won't stop crashing

Jason-Maloney wrote on 1/13/2023, 4:50 AM

Recently bought a new PC and VP16 was having issues, was informed that the issue was 16 couldn't handle my new PC specs so I upgraded hoping for smooth sailing. What I got was anything but, it baffles me that 16 ran smoother and better on my 10 year old pc than VP20 does on my brand new PC. I've tried so many recommended work around found on this Forum, YouTube, Vegas subbreddit. But nothing works it crashes everytime after a few minutes. And the preview image which, for the small amount of time I was running 16 on the new pc could use full quality with no stuttering of the image or lag. But in 20, even turned down to a smaller resolution is stutters, freezes, and the audio will continue even after I pause, as if there is some weird lag delay from pressing the space bar. For software that costs this much even with an upgrade needing this amount of troubleshooting just to edit a video is baffling. I've been trouble shooting and looking for solutions for nearly 6 hours. I never shouldve upgraded

Nothing wrong with your system specs as far as I can see. Vegas does not like variable frame rate so you should convert this to constant frame rate before importing it into Vegas using one of the free programs available such as shutter encoder.

(Intel 3rd gen i5@4.1GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD, 1080Ti GPU, Windows 10) Not now used with Vegas.

13th gen i913900K - water cooled, 96GB RAM, 4TB M2 drive, 4TB games SSD, 2TB video SSD, GPU RTX 4080 Super, Windows 11 pro

Two suggestions but with no promises ...

1. In Options/Preferences/File I/O (tab), activate 'Enable legacy AVC decoding'; and

2. For MOV media, in Options/Preferences/Deprecated Features (tab), make sure that 'Enable the QuickTime plugin' is activated.

It would be good to know where your source media is originating from. Is the AVC video coming from a phone? And where is the MOV media originating from?

If the NVIDIA decoder is giving you issues you can go to preferences/ file io and change hardware decoding to none. You have enough cores to likely decode it on the CPU (I also have a 13th gen. i5 but have the helpful iGPU).

If that fails as Dexcon wrote "Enable legacy AVC" will return Vegas to what it was like a few years ago.

FWIW I have 20 running pretty well on my 13600K with RTX 2080 so don't give up hope.
