Upgrading from Vegas Pro 10 on new machine - FREEZES!

Hi guys - I've recently built a brand new machine, after using Vegas Pro 10 on a Core-2 Q6600 for years.

  • i7-8700, 16GB, M.2 system drive, ASUS Z370-G with the latest Intel UHD, Win 10 Pro 64 v.1803 Bld 17134.345, Vegas Pro 16 (261) w/GPU accel turned on.

Not a powerhouse video system, I know, but hopefully sufficient. Notably, I do not have a discrete graphics card (yet), and I'm using both the HDMI and DP outputs of the on-board graphics.

I'm currently working on a project with friend-provided MTS and MOV files in the same project, but each has different frame rates, and I don't know the models of the cameras.

Anyway, seemingly randomly, VP16 is crashing - although it seems to be connected with playback in the timeline. Sometimes with a "Vegas Pro has stopped working", sometimes just a freeze of the window. That may not be much info, but it's all I have.

One possible question - is there a rock-solid Vegas version before 16 that I could install instead (15?). I don't mind not having the bleeding edge, I just needed to update the Vegas Pro 10 situation a bit - old codecs and tech, etc. Are Vegas 16 files backward compatible to any more stable recent versions?

First a question

Vegas Pro 16 (261) w/GPU accel turned on............. Notably, I do not have a discrete graphics card (yet),

How did you manage that?
What CPU is listed that you could turn it on?

"Pref|Video|GPU acceleration" lists Intel(R) Corporation (Intel(R) UHD as an option. I assume the onboard graphics in this case is semi-robust :-/ If that isn't helping much, and turning it off would stop the freezes, I'm game. Might end up getting a discrete card anyway.

I will turn that off for a while and see what happens.

While I'm on the subject... what would a good choice be for mid-low budget graphics card in the market right now?

The final versions of each version tend to be the most stable. i.e. Sony VP13 build 453/Magix VP13 build 545. VP14 build 270. VP15 build 387. But difficult to buy them now if you don't own a license, and owning a VP16 license does not permit you to use an older version. There's a VP16 update 2 on the way which has been a long time coming and *should* improve stability.

GPU acceleration with Intel graphics seems to be a cause of instability in VP16, so try with that off. Another thing to try would be to disable so4compoundplug.dll, if that is being used decode your files. If that works then there are 2 ways you can partially disable it and so retain some of its functionality (so4 blacklist & so4 hardware decoding internal preference).

AMD Radeon. Will the budget run to an RX580? Should be a pretty solid choice for Vegas. 4GB onboard memory may be enough.
