Upgrading from VMSP 7 to Vegas

I know this has been beaten to death but I am obviously a little slow on the uptake. What options do I have for upgrading from VMS Platinum 7 to full Vegas Pro? I see that BH offers Vegas Pro 8 (cd only) for $130 but can I go fro VMS to this or is this only an upgrade from other full Vegas versions? Since I already have DVDA, can I use it with Vegas Pro to do my DVD authoring?

Yes, you can use your DVDA with that OEM version of Vegas Pro. And btw, that's not an upgrade version, it's a complete version of Vegas Pro, so go for it.

Thanks for the info.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. I can purchase the full Vegas Pro package for $130, create my projects in Vegas Pro, then, burn the project onto a DVD using the DVD Architect Studio 4.5 that I got with my VMS-Platinum 8?

Yes. For that matter you could edit and render your project in Pinnacle or Windows Movie Maker and still use DVD Architect Studio to author and burn the DVD. DVDAS doesn't care where the video comes from.

I don't mean to sound obtuse or look a gift horse in the mouth, but, I don't understand how one could purchase the B&H disc for $130 and DVD Architect Studio from Sony at $45 and essentially get the same package as purchasing the Vegas Pro 8 from Sony at $550. Setting aside the nice documentation in the Sony offering, certainly, there must be a difference between the $175 suite versus the $550 package.

Well, there are two differences. If you go the B&H route then you still only have DVD Architect Studio instead of the full pro version, and SONY makes less money. As far as Vegas is concerned you get the exact same product either way.

Perhaps Sony won't give you update pricing in the future?

Ivan, I'm hoping what you said does not turn out to be the case! I purchased the B&H version of Sony Vegas Pro 8, and am hoping that that license key will not be discriminated against when Vegas Pro 9 is released :)

There are a few disadvantages to buying the B&H version - (1) Since it does not include DVDAS , this version is not eligible for the DVDAS update coming out this summer which includes BluRay support, and (2) not eligible for the (now expired) promotion of free book/video tutorials with purchase of of Vegas Pro 8.

Since I already have DVDAS through my VMS Plat 7, will I be able to upgrade the DVDAS once the update comes out even if I purchase the Vegas Pro 8 from B&H?

Updates and upgrades are two separate things. Updates are things like 8.0a -> 8.0b -> 8.0c within the same version and are free for the downloading if you purchased version 8.

Upgrades are from one version to the next, such as 6 -> 7 -> 8 and cost money. You can always upgrade. The question is whether you get the upgrade discount for having already owned a previous version.

That being said, purchasing Vegas pro from B&H will not invalidate your upgrade ability from DVDAS.
