Upper or Lower Fields

I know that there have been several threads discussing this issue, but hey, there are only a certain number of issues and then you must begin again. Also, I apoligize for the length of this post beforehand.

The thing is that I am still somewhat confused about whether to use upper or lower field first when rendering to NTSC DV for output to a TV.

The SF Tech say to use the stock template, which I did. The only thing I altered was the resample frames because I had some stills in my productions. Everything went fine except for the section where I used stills; and get this, only some of the stills caused problems (i.e. jittery)

So, I scratch my head and dive into this Forum using the search engine. I got some good leads, but I was still perplexed. One of the main things throwing me off is that the template uses lower field, the SF tech says use lower field, but my old Video Factory manual says use upper field (this is all for TV output).

What the heck? What do I have to lose? I re-render (brought in my finished production and rendered again to the same format) using the upper field setting and lo and behold but the jittery video dissappears completely, both on stills and motion sections. GREAT!!!, As Tony the Tiger says, but now I am scratching my head. Why did upper field fix the problem when the template uses lower field.

Any input (helpful please, not mean) would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate your response.

I am not sure that my pics are too high in resolution. I snagged the frames from the same footage as the video that is playing, so they are of identical (I believe) resolution. I will try the interlace filter though.

Thanks!

The interlace filter. YES!!!! That was the ticket.

I don't know what that thing does, but I am going to find out. What I do know is that it cleared up the jitters.

Thanks a bunch GG. It's folks like you that make these forums as cool as they are. I shall try to follow in your footsteps Oh Jedi Master!!!
