Used TBC?

It's been recommended that a TBC would benefit making preservation copies of old VHS tapes. To that end, does anyone know of a source for a used TBC? I've been looking at the TBC-1000, but the wife would kill me for buying it new.

Just buy a Sony digital 8 camcorder with the ability to transcode analog to digital DV, (not the cheapest model,it doesn't have this ability).. This process timebase corrects the tape..

So would the Canon ZR45MC qualify? I've had my eye on it......(just have to convince the boss (wife)).

I have a Canon ZR45 and it works fine with Vegas Video. It can pass through VHS or save it to DV tape.

I use a JVC SVHS Model S7800u/c This has a TBC built in. The Quality is even better when that's pumped into a Sony Minidv (I use a TRV17) or a slightly cheaper alternative would be a video walkman which sports Firewire passthrough with TBC

Jeffy, does that video walkman have an lcd screen ? Perhaps I'm being misled by the "walkman" label,but it looks just like a Dig8 VCR, (its pretty cool though, anybody have one ?)

I have been using a JVC HR-S9800U with TBC. I find that the use of TBC must be evaluated with each source tape. With some tapes the use of TBC has a noticeable improvement on transfer quality, while on others it actually makes things worse (video noise at the top of the picture and noticeable audio crackle). With each tape I must fiddle with TBC, digital/manual tracking, and image stabilization to get get the best setting.

FYI, I am using the Canupas ADVC-100.

Hi,

i purchased the JVC SVHS video recorder HR 7600, assuming the TBC would help with my video transfers. I also have the Canopus ADVC-100.

For most of my videos older than about 5 years the TBC in the JVC did jack. I pounded on the button and fiddled for hours trying to transfer a clip i taped of duran duran live from the 80s. It looked perfect on TV, but thru the ADVC-100 it skipped and froze constantly.

You will still need to buy a proper TBC if you buy one of these JVC recorders with so-called "TBC" built in. I firstly borrowed a friends FOR-A unit and had it just before the ADVC convertor, the video became absolutely perfect. I ended up buying the FOR-A off my friend for $600....back in the day when he worked at a TV station it cost them over $6000.
