Using CUDA for Prerender for better Previewing?

Grazie wrote on 2/29/2012, 9:45 PM
OK, utilizing Prerender, I'm experimenting in improving the Preview to FULL or even better fps Workflow.

I know SONY MP4 uses CUDA. I'd like to experiment in using CUDA to achieve this. What will this improve, over and above the Prerender from the CPU? Dunno, until I try.

How do I activate the CUDA MP4 - or any CUDA enabled Render Template for Prerender? Prerender appears to dictate only thoise Templates that are, in some way, "glued" to the Project.

TIA

Any takers?

not sure if I get this right, but can the pre render (shift B) be changed to another type? I thought that was hard wired in to Vegas.

Edit: scrub that, now i see you can select the pre render type (Shift M). But no, cannot see any GPU accelerated ones. Good point! Should be a way to do this.

@Paul. I think Grazie is talking about "Selectively Prerender Video" (Shift + M) and not "Build Dynamic RAM Preview" (Shift + B). Shift + B builds an uncompressed memory image while Shift + M generates a rendered file and is not limited by available Memory.

@Grazie. I cannot quite answere you full question, lack of knowledge, but from the available render options it appears that the available ones are mostly the ones which Vegas can play back quite effiently. After all, that would be the main reason for using Shift + M. Whether GPU is used (with GPU enabled) to speed up render, where CPU might be more efficient, and how to control it - I do not kow.

Edit: Gee, what all happens while one is typing.

Thanks Paul. You're getting my drift - yeah?

We've got Accel, how about for Prerender too?

Thanks Willem, yes i was just working it out while you typed. I must remember to check things out more before posting!

yes G, i do get your drift. And i think its a good idea. Would be faster while creating the previews. But not sure how the templates are controlled or where they are located. (not yet anyway) :)

Given that what you want to achieve can be done in several steps manually I think a script should be able to do it all for you. It can use whatever render template you desire making it flexible.

Can the Vegas Scripting "get-at" these parts of the program?

"Can the Vegas Scripting "get-at" these parts of the program?"

I'm no scripting guru, hopefully someone who is will correct me if I get this wrong.

I can see nothing to prevent one from doing the job. The only thing I doubt a script could do is take over the existing shortcut that invokes the native Prerender.

The actions required to do this manually are pretty simple.

1) Select loop region.
2) Render selecting Render Loop Region Only and the appropriate template and codec.
3) Place the rendered file on an upper new track or the current one.

Bob, doesnt Ctrl-M already do that?

"Bob, doesnt Ctrl-M already do that?"

Indeed but Grazie wants it done with GPU acceleration.

And can he not just select a GPU enabled renderer? all the render options are there.
A script would be better though, then the default render option could be right there in one click.

And can he not just select a GPU enabled renderer?

I'll just ask him: "Grazie, why can't you . . . . "

Paul, I looked and I looked but I don't see this as an option.

I've been through the Templates, that are presented, and I don't see the one that's CUDA enabled. Sure, go "Render As" then yes.

Now, if you can show me path I'll walk it.

Cheers

Thanks for contacting yourself lol.

ok, well unless 'IM' missing a fundemental point (possible, it happens), then try this:
select a region
press Ctrl-M
select a GPU enabled render option like say Sony AVC (select GPU acceleration in that render option)
click go.

Your GPU rendered preview will apear on the tracks above your TL.

any good?

Paul, I just woke up Grazie and he says he'll have a go right now. Once he's got the biscuit crumbs and sleep from his eyes . . .

(Yes, . . . it's Paul! Can you get on with it?!? He's waiting)

. . . . . .

Paul, Grazie says that's great, but he doesn't wont to create another Track. He says it's hard enough for him to keep track (hah keep track!!) of the work he's already doing.

I do see his point, Paul.

. . . . . . .

paul_w wrote on 3/2/2012, 11:10 AM
yeah... thats the downside... A script would most likely do the same... Worse, every time you do this, you get another track (or two with audio) above that again... not very tidy.

Oh well, least im not going mad... errrm, is your friend ok there? lol
