Using HV20 to convert NTSC to DV for Capture ?

Hi all - I've been away a while and now have another puzzler...

I have a bit of NTSC video on VHS that I want to pull into a production.

I'm trying to get my Canon HV20 to do the conversion and then suck it into Vegas via the firewire port.

I can get the NTSC video from the VHS machine to show up on the camera viewfinder, so the NTSC-Digital conversion is probably working OK.

I can connect the firewire from the camera to the computer and open the File->Capture->DV dialog, and when I do this I get a brief (2-3 seconds) of my NTSC/VHS video showing in the Vegas capture screen - so something is getting to Vegas OK. This video display disappears and never comes back... ?

Trying to capture the NTSC to DV converted video onto disk, the camera clicks like it is going into playback mode, and no video results in the capture.

I can successfully import/capture video shot on the camera, but not this bit of external NTSC when I try to use the HV20 as a converter.

I just upgraded from Vegas 7 to 9 hoping there were new drivers or a newer capture routine but everything seems the same and I'm out $250 for the upgrade.
Grrr

Anybody got any suggestions?

In VidCap, disable the "Enable DV device control" option (Options - Prefs - General).
After all, you're not controlling the VHS deck that the video is actually coming from.
Remember to enable this feature again once you're done.

Thanks Mike - that solved it.

I should have checked in here this morning before burning up a couple of hours and $250 on the upgrade. Time just gets away from me :(

Thanks again - you're a life saver - or maybe a Milky Way... whatever...
