Using MOTU 2408

Help! I am using the MOTU 2408 as an interface between
Tascam DA-88's (hooked up via the Tdif connectors) and a
Pentium 3 DAW. I always record the basic tracks to tape
first, then transfer them into the computer. This way, I
always have the basic tracks saved in the tape realm, not
on the hard drive(s). I monitor my work using a Tascam
mixer and the main studio monitors (from the main stereo
outs on the 2408 into 2 empty track inputs on the mixer).
My question is this: Is there a way to use this system and
use the mixer's on board eq prior to recording into
VegasPro? I want to be able to dial in just the right eq
prior to going into VegasPro so I do not have to 'ONLY'
resort to using software plugins for the eq task(s). I have
a feeling I can by using the analog inputs and outputs on
the DA-88's, mixer, and 2408...If so, will I lose quality
soundwise?
Thanks for any advise, help, etc. MM.

The short answer is that you are going to find that you can't add EQ
from an analog board between your multitracks and the MOTU 2408/Vegas
if you want to stay in the digital domain.

Here are a couple of other options that have one analog step added:

After the project is recorded to the DA-88's, route from the analog
outputs of the DA-88's to the Tascam Mixer so you can apply your EQ.
Then route your individual tracks from the Mixer, into the analog
inputs on the MOTU, and then into Vegas. If you have only one MOTU
and more than 8 tracks, you will have to make multiple passes and may
run into a problem aligning the tracks back up unless you put a click
at the head of all recorded tracks to use as an alignment marker when
everything is back in Vegas.

(Adding a "click" across ALL tracks in time at the beginning of each
song on your multitrack machine(s) is a good practice to get into as
it can save your buns, not to mention a lot of time, when manually
synching up tracks added to a DAW later on down the road ... even
guys like Roger Nichols do this as a matter of course, so get into
the habit early.)

Or, (and this makes the most sense), record your tracks without board
EQ to the DA-88, then fly them into Vegas digitally via the MOTU for
slicing and dicing. Once there, put the DA-88's into "Digital In"
mode, with all the record buttons enabled, and play back Vegas
through the MOTU 2408/DA-88 converters and into your TasCAM mixer
(you will have to set the MOTU PCI console appropriately to do this).

This way you can use Vegas for editing, level and panning, and your
TasCAM mixer to apply the board EQ and outboard effects that you
want, ... and use the stereo output of your board to go into a DAT or
whatever media you want for your final mix.

Granted, you have added an analog step with either of the above ...
but this would have been added anyway if you did not have the
Vegas/MOTU setup.

Although I personally shy away from tracking with EQ in most
instances, if you must use your board's EQ, and you want to stay in
the digital domain through the rest of the project after it is
recorded to the DA-88's, your best bet is to initially track into the
DA-88's with board EQ ... just make sure this is what you want.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Carl, I figured this is the course to take. I, like you, come
from the school which does not eq to tape...I like virgin basic
tracks! Looks like the 'best answer' to this question is to purchase
a digital mixer....I plan to purchase the Mackie d8b soon. Meanwhile,
I will try your suggestions. Thanks for your response.MM.
