using PS3 to preview HD projects

I'm thinking I may wait until DVDA-5 comes out to buy a Blu-Ray burner. Meanwhile, I do have a PS3 and I gather several forum members do as well.

It's nice that the PS3 can play HD files off external media like a CF card reader or a HDD, but it seems that only FAT32 format media is readable (meaning 4 GB max filesize). For typical HD files sizes, that is quite a limitation.

So, my question: is it possible to format a USB hard drive with a UDF2.5 or UDF2.6 filesystem (eg. as used on blu-ray disks)? If so how? And if you had such a drive, would the PS3 be able to read it?

Note: WinXP by itself does not read UDF 2.5 or above, but it does work with a driver such as Nero InCD. I'm told that Windows Vista can read UDF 2.5/2.6 natively.

There is another way around this problem. Remember that the AVCHD format isn't limited to DVD+-R media. You can use this format on memory cards and hard discs as well. If you author an AVCHD project like you were going to write it to a DVD+-R and then copy those files to a large capacity memory card or thumb-drive, you can do longer projects and have them play back with menus on a PS3.

Thanks for the tips! I just downloaded the "Red Kawa File Server 1.1" which is apparently intended just for this purpose. It works just fine, and is much easier to use than the Nero MediaHome UPnP server I had tried before.

Why use a web based server?
If you are saving files over 4GB on your PS3 it will quickly fill up.
I only keep short clips (like songs from Fountains of Bellagio in HD ) on the PS3.
Everything else I view over the network without any file size or file system limitation.
Just install Wnindows Media Server or WMP11 on you PC and share the relevant folders. For future viewing all you do is switch the PC on and access from the PS3 using menu.

Edit: I got a fright when I tested my advice as every file that had previously worked said Corrupted Data.
All HDV captures in Vegas 7 renamed to .mpg.
I was running v2.10 firmware.
I updated to v2.30 and everything was sweet again.
Not sure if it was a firmware bug or an abberation
