Using SoFo Noise Reduction in VV3

Randy Brown wrote on 12/3/2002, 9:13 AM
Good Morning everyone,
I shot a Christmas video for a hospital yesterday that will entail still shots and lots of very short clips of the staff saying "Merry Christmas" to be set to music. As you can imagine, there is lots of ambient noise in the various locations; I'm wondering what the most efficient way of reducing the noise in VV3. Should I assign Noise Reduction to the whole track and take samples of each clip or should I do each clip individually? Also, can I normalize the whole track at once?
TIA,
Randy

You really need to work each clip with the Noise Reduction in Sound Forge. Using Noise Reduction in VV is great but this is a job for the Forge. You will have to work each clip, one at a time. You will need to probably run each clip through the NR several times taking small chunks.

Normalizing is an event function. Again you can do this while you are working the clip in Forge.

You may want to try making a noise profile. I just wrote another tutorial convering that topic removing the annoying noises my camera makes. You can see (yuck) and hear me in the vid. I have a bad cold, so my voice isn't up to par, but it does demonstrate the effect fairly well.

Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything stupid. I've learned to ask at this forum (even when something is covered in the manual) after so many times of reading something here and then realizing I did it the hard way.
Thanks for your patience,
Randy

I have forge but dont use it when using NR. I just add NR as a non realtime effect and generate a take then I dont have to go into forge.

Hey Redeye,
Will you please tell me exactly how you go about this and are there any shortcuts I could be missing?
TIA,
Randy

i use nr in sound forge and have been very happy
in fact, a friend of mine who is a professional videographer asked me if i might be able to clean up an audio project she was working on
she was amazed at the difference---so much so, she may end up buying sound forge and NR
remember, run a pass twice at 20% instead of once at 40%
that is the key---of course, that tip is covered in the manual
good luck

SB, Will you please tell me exactly how you go about this and are there any shortcuts I could be missing? It seems very different to me in VV3 (as opposed to Sound Forge or Sonar).
TIA,
Randy

You might avoid getting to carried away with getting rid of large amounts of the background noise, if it is people and sounds of the hospital.
Your viewers will be focused on the people and not the background noise. Heck they have learned to tune it out everyday so they will be the least likely to notice it.
Asumming this is an in-house vid.
In short limit the noise but keep the clarity. as long as your not struggling to hear the speaker it will be fine.

Thanks W, but with the music bed I'll be adding, some clips will be hard to hear as the subject is 20' feet (or more) away from the camera mic. This is my first job for them and I have until Friday, so I want to take my time and impress them. Besides, I just paid $280 for my new toy and want to play with it : )
Thanks again,
Randy

i use noise redcution in sound forge
i also make a copy of everything i put in it so i don't lose the original
i don't use nr in vv3
here are my steps
load it in sound forforge
create a lopp of the sound i want to take
open noise reduction
capture a noise print
hit preview to hear it
adjust the levels
20% top
mode 2--really depends on the audio
process it
then do the same thing again----and viola--great audio
hope this helps

You can normalize the whole track at once. Right-click it, select Switches and then Normalize.

I've no exp with NR, been using SoFo's Paragraphic EQ and Graphic Dynamics a lot. Learnt that voices on video can take a lot of EQ before anyone begins to think they sound weird. Plus, it's easier for your ear/mind to filter out background noise in real life than when everything comes from the same direction (loudspeakers).
Also, music can take a lot of dramatic volume changes if the volume is replaced by something that demands attention. Meaning: pull the music down when someone speaks. Let the words come out clearly.

sb said "...create a loop of the sound i want to take
open noise reduction capture a noise print..."

Thanks sb, that's pretty much the way I've been doing it in Sound Forge but was hoping I could do this in VV3.

"20% top"

By this do you mean setting the reduction of db by approximately 20% of the highest db peak in the file?

"mode 2--really depends on the audio"

This is where I really need to study the manual.

Thanks again sb,
Randy

Tor said "You can normalize the whole track at once. Right-click it, select Switches and then Normalize."

If I right-click the track (far left) I only get "mute, solo. invert phase" under switches. If I right-click in the track (outside of a clip) I get no options for switches. If I right-click a clip and put a check beside normalize then go to properties(or check normalize in the properties dialogue) and recalculate, then click ok, it will normalize the clip (only). Am I missing something?

Thanks Tor,
Randy

Maybe not. I'm in the middle of a long render, so can't check. Try "select media to end" and then normalize.

Right Click on the beginning AUDIO and then SELECT EVENTS TO END, then, Right Click and NORMALIZE.

I have NOT had good luck with Normalizing whole track, but that is what everyone told me to do when I tried it. If you have problems, please post here so that people can see and perhaps fix your problems.

yep, it works...thank you

"I have NOT had good luck with Normalizing whole track, but that is what everyone told me to do when I tried it."

I could see it not working well if the dynamics (at least the peaks) of each clip are not pretty much the same.

Thanks again,
Randy

i called sofo and they suggested that i put NR in sound forge--so that's what i did
i wasn't sure if i should put it in vv3 or sound forge?
sorry-but i can't help you if it's in vv3
good luck

sb, are you saying it doesn't even show up in VV3 for you? For me, it's "available" in Sound Forge, VV3 and Sonar. The demo looked and worked the same in Sonar as it did in Sound Forge, but now only the Sound Forge gui looks the same.
Thanks sb,
Randy
