using the camera mic?

Would it be exceptable to use the GL2 camcorder mic to record a three minute speech.The recording will take place in a very quiet office, the speaker will be 6 or 7 feet away from the camera.

I'm trying to avoid bringing in a cart with mixer monitor mics ect.

My thoughts are to get in and out of the speakers office without
bringing in unnecessary equipment.

Only if hollow sound is acceptable to you and the person doing the speech :-(

That's what I'd call overkill for this job.
Bring a lavaliere mic with a 15 ft. cable (it'll never be "just" 6 or 7 ft.), plug it into the camcorder and you're all set for good sound.

You don't need a sound cart to hook up a lavalier mike that would give you vastly better sound.

The GL2 needs an audio adapter, but that thing is quite small.

The onboard mic is omni, so you can expect to hear a lot of room reflections 6-7 feet away from the speaker, unless the walls and ceiling are acoustically nice.

You could use something like http://microphonemadness.com/products/mmlaplapstyl.htmthis[/link] mic. For a GL2 you would also need to power it with one of http://microphonemadness.com/categories/battery_filter_modules_mono.htmlthese[/link] since unlike Sony cameras, the Canon's have no DC bias voltage.

There is lots of other cool stuff at http://microphonemadness.com/microphonemadness.com[/link] if you poke around.
