You are doing nothing wrong. Some VirtualDub filters don’t work with the PluginPAC Adapter because they need to look ahead a few frames to do their processing and the Vegas SDK API does not allow this. You need to pre-process your AVI’s in VirtualDub to use Dynamic Noise Reduction (or any of the temporal filters) and then bring them back into Vegas. (at least this is what I do)

We shot a wedding back in November and there was a specific request for no use of lights. We used a Sony VX9000, and the results were OK, but a little grainy.

Would the VirtualDub Dynamic Noise Reduction filter have helped to clean it up? Is there any info on how to use this?

Yes. I’ve cleaned up video that I shot without lights and it does a reasonable job. I run it though the Dynamic Noise Reduction before I do any other correcting. It only has one parameter which is the noise threshold. It’s pretty easy to use from that perceptive.

These are the filters I use to get rid of the grainy noise on VHS. You might try this on low-light DV footage:

Donald Graft's Smart Smoother (Diameter 3, Threshold 30, Interlaced Source checked)

Antonio Foranna's Noise Reduction Suite (only the Temporal Smoother enabled, SCD 100%, Dark 6, Light 10, Interlaced checked)

The smart smoother is very slow, and I use it far less than I used to, not only to save time, but also because I found it eliminated too much detail.

I should mention that I found a filter last year that picks up where "Smart Smoother" leaves off. The problem is that the official web site is down. It's called "Smart Smooth High Quality" and is/was a pretty interesting filter. I can't seem to find any other web page that currently hosts it (sigh).

has a single download that contains 74 filters for VirtualDub. Unfortunately, it does not have the Smart Smoother High Quality, but it has the NRS filter from Foranna, which is the later version of his KNRC filter (i.e., the NRS is newer, more features, etc.).

Looks like most of the Virtualdub filters are temporarily not easily available.
