V11 Levels Strangeness

I just noticed some strangeness in the way Vegas 11 seems to hand Levels.

Based on some work by Nick Hope, I created a Vegas 10 project to render and observe what's happening to Levels when playing in various players. The Project is here: NickHopeLevelsV10vsV11.zip The cRGB->sRGB FX were applied at the Event level.

So just as a refresher, here's what when rendering from Vegas 10 to MainConcept mp4 & playing in WMP.

First, Vegas 10 with No FX applied:

Scoping (w/o the titles):

Next, Vegas 10 with the cRGB->sRGB Levels FX applied:

Scoping:

This is what is to be expected based upon all the earlier discussion in several monster threads. However, notice what happens if we open and render the same project in Vegas 11.

And now the surprise (to me anyway):

Has this been discussed before? Was I asleep at the wheel? Can others confirm this?

I refer to the other thread - "v11 vs. v10 Sony Levels inconsistency" -

as well.

There is a difference no doubt. I used mxf video clips and rendered it to mxf with Levels cRGB-->sRGB added as well as Input Start set to 0.140 and Input end set to 0.860 to expand the top and bottom, GPU selected and GPU Off and yes it is most noticable on the upper (white) and lower (black) objects. Personally, just looking at a colorful video clip, I prefer the "GPU selected" output.

What I found very interesting is when I imported both rendered clips and only applied Broadcast Colors Lenient FX that I use for PAL Video/DVD that the Histogram/Waveform/RGB were so closely matched, it almost made no difference.

Well, after considerable testing, I think this may be a false alarm. I was worried about the way Vegas 11 handled Levels & Renders, but I think the problem may be associated with the way I constructed the original Vegas 10 project (using generated media).

If the basis of the project is an image with 0,8,16 & 235,245,255 panels, then the Levels FX with the cRGB->sRGB template works fine. Here's Vegas 11 project if anyone wants it: NH-V11.zip

Here's the YouTube example. Works as expected.

Jerry, can't open your projects because I don't have V11. Can you expand a bit please? Why would a project built with generated media in V10, shift the levels in V11?

Can you expand a bit please? Why would a project built with generated media in V10, shift the levels in V11?Ha!! That's the question I can't answer (i.e. the "strangeness"). That said, my big concern was that Vegas 11 was handling Levels significantly different than Vegas 10, and now I've satisfied myself Vegas 11 works as would be expected by creating the second project (native to Vegas 11).

I think there's something screwy (a technical term) about the way Vegas 11 converts the levels in generated media from a project that was created in Vegas 10.

It would be interesting to find out exactly what's going on here, but I've spent several hours trying figure it out (without success) and I now realize it's not a significant problem, so I've decided to put this one to bed. After all, how often do you add a Levels correction to generated media, and then open it in a later version of Vegas?
