v13 closed captioning workaround

springfever wrote on 8/10/2014, 10:25 PM
Because I am a teacher of the deaf, editing training videos for educators and parents of deaf and blind babies, I need to include captioning in our videos. New to editing, I purchased Vegas v13 and captioning does not work. I am looking for another alternative that is inexpensive. I see in the posts here that the bug with v13 is at least 3 months old. So....my question: if I purchase software such as moviecaptioner, which is relatively inexpensive, will I be able to caption videos rendered from Vegas 13? Or can anyone recommend another workaround. We work with the deaf. We need captions. Any help would be appreciated.

Do they have to be closed captions? I've done many videos for the deaf and either use the titler for captions, or used named Markers which can be converted to subtitles for DVD.

PeterWright has the correct idea. YOU DONT use closed captioning unless you are working broadcast and are part of the broadcast chain. The term is thrown around loosely but it means something very specific.

What YOU DO WANT is exactly as Peter describes - either direct title entry which is a no brainer or you can push out markers to subtitles and back - lots of tools and utilities to do this and can be brought directly into Blu-ray disc authoring.

Captioning in Vegas can be a bit of a challenge. If you do not need to translate into foreign languages, the Caption Assistant plugin for Vegas is quite nice. You simply load in your script, play the video, and click to mark the beginning of each new sentence.

It's a bit pricey but very fast, and time is $$.

Have used that plug-in on a number of CC projects and can highly recommend it.
One of the best pieces of s/w in my toolkit.

The OP does NOT need closed captioning folks.

Thanks to everyone (belated thanks, sorry) for your help. I have used the titler as you suggested and it works fine for what I need. It's slow but gives me flexibility to place captions near speaker and change font/color. I'm having fun with it. Thank you, thank you!

Hi

I am in Australia and want to purchase this Closed Captioning software. But I keep getting a Server error. I have tried emailing VASST but it is returned as no such address. I tried leaving a phone message but no response. I then wrote Snail Mail NO RESPONSE to date.

Is there anyone in or near Stockton Utah who can tell me if this company is still around or what?

What the heck has one to do to BUY something these days? Grrr. I recently upgraded to VegasPro 13 purchased other VASST products from the SonyCreative site all OK.

Anyone able to help me please?

Not sure what is your problem, but the site works just fine from here.

Here's the link to the VASST store

And WHERE is "here"? If you are in the USA I know it works fine. I am NOT in the USA. .
Some payment systems will only work within set boundaries.

It is NOT my computer as I have had similar problems with other sites and the suppliers did work arounds for me.

I cannot even send an email to these guys as I stated before they are returned with a Mailer Daemon message saying no such address.

I am in Canada, but judging by your inability to even send email to VASST Sales Support, it may be your service provider's problem.

Have you tried to open a ticket with them?

edit: Search this forum for JohnnyRoy, and send him a pvt msg via his profile link. I am sure he'd be more than happy to help.

Some tips since I am not sure what your final output is.

Vegas CC works great. You just move the cursor to where you want the CC and hit C, then select CC from do down and type the caption. Some of the most common codecs do not support embeding CC that is where most of the issues come in. Broadcast codecs have these embedding functions built-in. Try rendering time line with CC to XDCAM, and playback in VLC with CC enabled. You can use the edit details window to perform faster text field edits, than right clicking each marker.

Other codecs handle CC as a separate text file with timing info, which is then displayed by the player as an overlay.

A very cheap solution to CC is to use the function built in to YouTube. Edit vegas, upload to Youtube, wait for YouTube to CC your video, then go in and correct the CC. You can then download the CC file for inclusion with other uses, or just display from YouTube.
