V15 freezing when switching on/off previewing on ext.monitor (Win 10 )

Mindmatter wrote on 7/6/2018, 5:38 AM

Hi all,

although I suspect that the new big win 10 update messed things up, it might also be a v15 issue. Fact is that I had v15 running like a charm until the update, and now this happens:

When switching to ext. monitor, there's a short black screen an all my 3 monitors, then the preview appears OK. After a few switches tho, V15 just freezes. Task manager says V15 is running ( not the usual "not responding" ). A coupla times, v15 got back to running after 1-2 minutes, but mostly it just stays frozen. This really is a biggie for me, and as I said it didn't happen before. The slight bug I did expreiencedwas that both previews were always running at the same time, and switching the small one to off froze the ext. one.

UPDATE:

It just got worse. V15 now freezes as soon as I switch to ext. monitor preview. So that means that right now, cannot work with my preview monitor on. Any solution is highly appreciated!

Can you rollback the video driver?

I do not have this specific problem of freezing but I do have a similar problem where the secondary monitor (resolution of 2560 x 1080, Ultra-widescreen) has the preview off-center so the lower bottom and left-most part of the video is cropped. chopped off, and unviewable.

My main desktop monitor is an Ultra-widescreen resolution of 3440 x 1440. Both monitors are 21:9 aspect ratio. Version 14 of Movie Studio had no problem doing a preview on the smaller monitor but version 15 creates a preview on the 2nd monitor that is chopped off and does not center the image completely on that secondary screen.

The whole preview picture thing seems to be borked in this new version of Movie Studio it seems =/

Here are 2 screenshots of the secondary screen so you can see what I am talking about (the right-most part of both images is of my desktop background in both images and how much of the preview is actually chopped). In version 14 the entire preview image would display correct and CENTERED on the smaller screen. I have played around with all the settings I can find in version 15 and nothing fixes this. This is a version 15 software bug for preview I am sure of it!

Both of our problems with the preview image needs to be fixed!

It seems I found a solution. After the Win10 update, I had turned off "show task bar on all monitors".

I just turned that back on and the freezes stop. The very short black screen on all 3 screens when switchin preview on/off remains though, but that's not really an issue.

Weird. But glad I can work now!

These are my current settings which are IDENTICAL to when I had version 14 of Movie Studio installed. Nothing has changed on my end. Very odd.

"Video" tab settings

"Preview Device" tab settings

That is a VERY weird solution. Btw, that setting is located under the Personalization section then selecting Taskbar, like so:

Glad it fixed your problem but this is what my problem with the preview window looks like still.

The Original main monitor window screenshot (3440 x 1440):

...and the preview window nonsense (2560 x 1080) ...THAT is just bullshit! (even with no taskbar on that preview monitor showing >.< )

In the Preview Device tab I can disable Scale output to fit display but then that negates having a big monitor to display it at doesn't it?

I have done that already. I rolled it back to the exact version I had when I had version 14 of Movie Studio installed and no dice. Something version 15 did borked it good in the preview window.

There are a bunch of possibilities; do a forum search on "preview" if you have not already.

Also, post your information as suggested in FAQ's and take a look at the troubleshooting guides. Not sure if you are on Vegas pro or Movie Studio? If latter, the post needs to be moved.

PS Often (not always) this turns out to be something user related, so don't jump to conclusions about bugs.

OK it just started again.

V15 crashes when I switch on ext. preview. Yesterday even V13 did it.

I then tried 3 different drivers for my radeon 290: 18.5.1, 18.6.1, and an older 17.5.1

While some worked for a while and then froze V15 and even v13, the newest 18.6.1 freezes V15 but not V13.

needless to say, my work is now impossible on Win10. Boy am I happy I didn't delete my Win7 partition yet!

The crashes don't occur on win7.

This is seriously annoying, and I don't even know if it's Vegas, Windows or the drivers.

On a sidenote, Hitfilm express 4 now crashes right on start.

UPDATE:

It just got weirder.

I tried switching my 3rd monitor off - and then V15 doesn't crash anymore. When I switch it back on afterwards, the crashes don't happen either. But when I start V15 with the 3 monitors on, it's mayhem again.

Check if Windows and Vegas indemnified/numbers the monitors the same way. If not, try to sort that out.

Thanks OldSmoke, I just checked, they are identical.

the whole thing remains weird...I have to start V15 with the 3rd monitor off, then switch it on once V15 is loaded. Otherwise it freezes.

OK weirder still...:

now, even with the 3rd monitor switched off, V15 crashes the first time I load it and select ext. preview.

Kill it via task manager, reopen and it doesn't happen again.

What baffles me is that it doesn't happen on Win7, and that i generally have the impression that things are less stable on win10, also other programs.

If it’s me in that situation, I would uninstall each and every monitor in can find in the device manager, including those that might be hidden, unplug all but the main and boot up Windows. Once the main is working, I would plug in the next monitor, make sure they have the same ID in all programs (Windows, Vegas and the driver utility) and then plug in the last one.

I have gone through a similar exercise when I had two of the exact same GPU in my system, the IDs never where in sync. It didn’t crash Vegas but caused a lot of strange behavior.
