V15 Increasing rate of Crashes

Widetrack wrote on 12/14/2018, 9:49 AM

After installing V16, Bld 307, Vegas would lock up every 8-10 minutes, forcing me to end it with Task Manager. Needing to get things done, I re-installed V15 B387. It seemed ok, as long as I kept saving after every change. But yesterday, trying my first serious project, the crashes continued, and continued to come at ever shorter intervals, and I needed to restart the computer after every lockup. By the end of the night, I barely got one, 7-minute render out of it (and it was rendering mostly already-rendered clips, so it went quick). The original footage was 4k, 3840x2160, 23.976fps. I rendered that to 1920x1080, 29.97 and used that in the project. I needed to render as a square,1080 x 1080 frame, which I did by making the Pan/Crop frame 1080x1080, and changing the Render Properties to 1080x1080. One other odd thing that happened is that when I would re-open after a crash, and I'd see the window asking if I wanted it t recover an auto-saved version, I found that the version of the project I'd last saved had more recent changes than the auto-saved one Vegas opened for me. I'm doing this for a Adobe Premier fan, whom I'd told how quickly Vegas could do this. He still need to get 4 more similar clips out, and I may have to bail. I don't recall Vegas failing me so disastrously since the earliest days.

Any suggestions are deeply appreciated.

That sounds good.

I just read the thread where Matthias announced this, and people have found a memory leak bug. Is this still a problem?

With my hardware from signature I have no problems with 15 and 16 for the things I'm editing with it.

If it is affecting both versions, it could be an issue with your system, not Vegas, but for starters I would try updating your GPU drivers. That's where I start with every vegas issue, as it solves 50% of them for me.

After installing Bld 416, I began working on my project. Vegas locked up after about 3 minutes. I updated my Nvidia GT 730 driver earlier this week, and this morning spent an hour with Dell Support checking hardware and installing a couple of new hardware drivers.

I'm trying V14 again. Is there a later build than 270?

j-v wrote on 12/14/2018, 11:13 AM

No, but I think your problem is your used hardware ( i5 and 8GB RAM) in combination with the source video's, also 14 wil give no fluent editing.

Why would it get increasingly worse? A week ago, in V15, I could work for an hour and as long as I saved every few minutes, I was alright. Now, I get about 1-2 minutes before it locks again.

How could I know that, it's you behind the hardware.
You should have to know what happened there compared to one week ago.

Right. From my position "behind the hardware," I know that nothing except some updated drivers has changed in the past six months or more, and none of my other apps are experiencing any remotely similar problems. Just Vegas. When there are no hardware changes, and one specific application exhibits continuously worsening failures, I focus on the software.

j-v wrote on 12/14/2018, 12:19 PM

Stay doing that because it's you with the problems. I tried to help as much I could and that stops here, Sorry!

What other software is running without problems? Any other NLE in your system?

Have checked the inside of your computer to make sure it doesn’t overheat? There are just so many variables.

I've had success at getting Vegas Pro 16 to run stable by using the free CCleaner Windows app ( www.ccleaner.com ) and running the Registry Cleaner tool ( see menu on the left side of the Ccleaner app window ), and then rebooting Windows. I've been using the free CCleaner for 5+ years now ( mainly to get rid of garbage files that collect on my computer ) and it's been a big help with getting my computer and apps to run better.

Agreed, 100%. I've used Cleaner for a while as well, but I've missed the registry Tool. At your suggestion, I will definitely start running it a lot more often. Thank you for the helpful tip.

Old Smoke: I take your point. I don't use anything as demanding as Vegas, and there's a good chance My hardware is not up to editing current video formats, though a few guys have suggested that it is possible. I'm probably going to have to look for something faster.

Vegas may/should run on your hardware too. It may not be the best experience but I can even run it on a Q6600 with a GTX580 and 8GB RAM. and Windows 10Pro.

I just CCleaned files and Registry. So far, so good. Thanks again.

The Dingo: After cleaning my register with CCleaner (and man, there was a list as long as my arm of stuff that needed to be cleaned), I finished the entire project in V15 without a glitch! And it makes perfect sense. This is why the problem kept getting progressively worse: the register was getting more and more full of garbage. Thanks again, Dingo. I'm going to re-install V16 and see if It works too.
