V20 Build 411: Large Raster Hiccups/Issues

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 7:52 AM

Hello and thanks for potential help. We have been using Vegas for about 16 years, but have never posted to a thread like this.

I need to create an iMax style video 6400x1280 for display on a 75ft LED panel screen. I can make my project that size, and I can even type that size in a few of the render codec settings (MAGIX AVC/AVC and PNG Sequence - I can't go that large for ProRes and the majority of the other render options).

Though I can render, I have these issues right now:

1]. Is there any way that I can render that size to ProRes options? I can do it in Premiere Pro and I can convert the Vegas AAC to ProRes with Media Encoder, but Vegas stops me from entering the custom size at 5120 wide for ProRes.

2]. When I render the 6400x1280 MAGIX AAC/AVC video and pull it back into the timeline - the thumbnail on the timeline and in the media bin shows the image from the video, but when I play the video from the timeline nothing appears in the Preview Window. The frames are ticking away and the cursor is moving - but it's just black. This same file plays fine in Windows Media Player and opens and plays fine on the Premiere Pro timeline. If I convert it to ProRes using Media Encoder the video plays fine in the Vegas timeline. It loads but does not play in the Preview Window in either V20 and V17.

3]. I have an mp4 animatic at 6400x1280 provided by an animator. It plays fine in Media Player. I can open it in Vegas v17 and it plays fine. Same with Premiere Pro. Vegas V20 will not let me bring it in. Error message is: "Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files. The file could not be opened. Make sure the file exists and that you have access to the file/folder." Doesn't make sense - it opens and plays everywhere else INCLUDING Vegas v17.

Thanks in advance to anybody who has any ideas on these issues.

Steve

@GreenIguanaProductions Hi just thought I'd let you know I rendered this,

If I used NV Encoder I get an immediate error msg with no render

But using Mainconcept it rendered no prob & this it back on the timeline, when dragging it in it did take a moment before the image showed but it played fine after that.

ProRes.......

This is the same but rendered using Prores, the box did limit the size as you say but ticking 'Allow source to adjust file size' created this,

& this is it dragged back on the timeline wuith the render settings (I didn't spend any time fine tuning, it was just the first I picked, changed the size & ticked 'Allow source to adjust file size') , I clicked 'Yes' to 'Adjust project to media' ,

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 9:53 AM

Thanks for your help. I am confused - I ticked the "Allow" source but am still only able to max at 5120. Are you saying that you were able to render ProRes 6400x1280 from Vegas? I am confused on how the "source" plays into this. Some of my source files are just 4K video. Thanks for clarification.

Former user wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:21 AM

@GreenIguanaProductions This video clip was just 4k, I think Source means the project size, I use it sometimes to render 4:3 even tho the orig file is 16:9.

This ProRes 444XQ was one I'd used recently so was the first to come up, I just changed the size to the max & ticked Allow, I'll do some more,

--- 422 with Allow ticked produced a weird size ...🤔🤷‍♂️ (Edit - I didn't change the sizes to Custom 5120 x 1280)

I'll be back, need to work this out.

@GreenIguanaProductions My experiments show that it doesn't if it's 422, HQ or XQ as long as the size is changed to Custom & the size boxes set as in this pic, + 'Allow' ticked the render comes out at 6400 x 1280,

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:31 AM

So this is mindboggling. You were able to type in 6400x1280 in the ProRes Render Size? I have to believe this has something to do with all those TRUE FALSE Internal settings. What else can it be?

Former user wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:36 AM

@GreenIguanaProductions No, I couldn't type in 6400 x 1280, it only let me go to 5120 x 1280, but 'Allow' seems to over ride that & renders at the project size.,

I don't play with those Internal settings so they're all at default .

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:37 AM

Ah! Okay - now I understand. Let me try.

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 10:45 AM

Okay - so I WAS able to render smoothly to ProRes 6400x1280 by typing in the size 5120x1280 and ticking the ALLOW box. I get a nice 6400x1280 file that plays in VLC, and loads and plays fine in Premiere Pro - but see here - even though there is a thumbnail loaded - it does not SHOW on my timeline preview viewer. It plays and the frames tick by - but just black.

@GreenIguanaProductions hmmm I dunno, you've got a dual CPU & dual GPU?

Try going to Preferences & turning off GPU in FileIO, see if that makes any difference 🤷‍♂️

I wanted to get another GPU but as i understand it Vegas can't utilise two GPUs , I might well be wring tho, 🤷‍♂️

PS. I have Quicktime installed https://support.apple.com/kb/dl837?locale=en_GB

Thanks everybody for your help. Duh - it was my bad on playing the file on the timeline - I'd forgotten the project I was bringing the files into had a mask track and I was dropping on that - it plays fine.

I am left with one issue which is loading this file attached into v20. It loads into V17 - it loads and plays in Premiere Pro and Media Player. Anybody have an idea? I get the "Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files. The file could not be opened. Make sure the file exists and that you have access to the file/folder."

Former user wrote on 7/7/2023, 11:57 AM

@GreenIguanaProductions Is that the file you mentioned from 'provided by an amateur'

If you want us to try it for you you'll have to upload it to a file sharing site like Google Drive, Vegas forum recodes the file making it useless to try?

Open Google, top right is a little square of 9 dots - Open Google Drive

Drag that video on & let it upload,

When it's loaded right click on it - Share,

A window will open, choose 'Anyone with the link' - Copy link.

At the top of a new comment is a chain button, paste the link in there to share that video in a comment..

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 12:04 PM

No - I wrote "animator" not amateur. The share file is here now let me know if works - I grabbed if from an email where it's already on Share drive - thanks!https://drive.google.com/file/d/1u-Nhr3v2GnWHme8s7_PUYw0fXcREcVAq/view?usp=gmail

@GreenIguanaProductions Sorry my bad, need some glasses 👴🧐 Thanks

Former user wrote on 7/7/2023, 12:18 PM

@GreenIguanaProductions Sorry, it took a moment to load into Vegas but it plays fine,,

I edited the loading bit because that's boring. (Video Encode in Taskmanager is the screen capture so ignore that)

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 12:19 PM

Yes - I expected this. I'm miffed. Why on earth would I get that message only in v20 and it loads fine in v17 here and fine in v20 for you?

mark-y wrote on 7/7/2023, 12:42 PM

I think the problem is with the autoproxy that was built when you first imported the file. Did you by chance abort the proxy build?

Look for and delete a file named "sample-1.mp4.sfvp0" Also delete it from your Project Media windo. Then rebuild the Proxy.

Might try a fresh project if you are still stumped. As you can see, it all works and previews great here, VP20b411.

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 12:52 PM

Thanks mark, when I first started having the problem those are the first files I deleted. But I'm going to try that again also reboot and open a fresh project as soon as I get back from the gym and see what happens. Interestingly, looking for a workaround, I loaded sample one into Vegas version 17, copied the clip from the timeline, and dropped it into 20. It dropped in, but it has no thumbnail and will not play. Weird stuff.

If you need to reset Vegas 20 to factory defaults, instructions are here:

GreenIguanaProductions wrote on 7/7/2023, 2:13 PM

Gid and mark-y - thanks very much for all your help. Resetting factory settings did the trick - funny thing - it could not load the old project I had been playing with, which was created with my previous settings. So - all 3 of my issues have been resolved - I just ran tests on all of them. Thank you again!
