V20 imports iphone file differently to V21 - Possible Bug?

andyrpsmith wrote on 12/4/2023, 1:01 PM

Iphone file imports into V20 with pixel format square, V21 imports it as 1.3333(HDV 1080).

V20 image:

V21 image:

I can modify it in V21 by properties pixel aspect ratio change to square, but why the difference when importing the same VEG.

@andyrpsmith Hi, my phone no longer does 4:3, my Gopro does but it's a different size so this is the best i can do,

4:3 with a 90º rotation, not the best being dark but It looks correct

Can you share your clip?

Many thanks for the replies. Tried the solution by VegasNeal1, but V21 (trial) did not save the pixel change and keeps loading the 1.3333 aspect each time, while V20 does not. Maybe you cannot save the change in a trial version. Wonder why V21 is doing this and V20 does not? (Every year Magix has sent me an offer to upgrade but this year they have not so I am yet to move to V21).

@john_dennis

He had prepared his media in a photo editor to match the dimensions of the project. 1920x1080 for 16:9 stills and 1440 x 1080 for 4:3 stills. The 1440 x 1080 stills appear to me to have triggered a pixel aspect ratio decision in Vegas that caused the media to be stretched until the properties of the media were changed manually.

To verify my conclusion, I prepared 4:3 media as follows:

One .jpg was cropped, but not resized, yielding dimensions 4864 x 3648. The same .jpg was also resized to 1440 x 1080

I can't replicate that in a 1920x1080 or a 3840x2160 project,

@andyrpsmith said: "Wonder why V21 is doing this and V20 does not?"

The shade-tree cynical diagnostician responds:

It's possible that every coder on the planet opens a new build of any software and, as soon as the seat of her office chair starts to warm, forgets that people used software in past to actually get things done without adjusting the properties of every clip on the timeline.

Since you have a camera that produces output that will affect you continuously,

  1. open a problem ticket with Magix.
  2. Mark your post (Bug) in the title.

Perhaps, there is a fix in place for stills, but, not for video.

Click on my ugly mug and see my 2021 Update comment under My Interests. Except that I remember the issue in the past, it is probably number 173 on my current list of things to agonize over.

@john_dennis Hi,

I already tried a video but can't replicate the OPs so maybe there's something different that his vid affects in Vegas,

@andyrpsmith

With variable frame rate such as this...

Frame rate                               : 29.286 FPS
Minimum frame rate                       : 15.000 FPS
Maximum frame rate                       : 30.000 FPS

... I am curious as to how these clips play on the Vegas timeline.

you asked: "...why the difference when importing the same VEG."

 Have you right clicked on the clip on the timeline in each version to see which decoder is being used for each Vegas Pro version?

I might consider conforming the frame rate to a constant in Shutter Encoder before adding to the Vegas timeline.

Could you share a copy of a file from that camera on One Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. and post the link here?

@Former user

I rendered videos with the pixel dimensions from the Mediainfo report posted earlier, 1308 x 1744, 1440 x 1920, 1744x1308 and 1920 x 1440. No rotation information and none of the iphone meta data were included. I was unable to reproduce the behavior with video in Vegas Pro 21-187, either.

Former user wrote on 12/4/2023, 10:22 PM

@john_dennis 👍 Yep, I didn't try rendering anything I was just using the only two cameras I have, a GoPro 11 & Samsung S23 Ultra, only the Gopro does 4:3. I think we need to try @andyrpsmith's file & see if we get the same result as him.
