V4 hangs when importing project

I did a rough-cut edit on a 35 minute, three-camera DV shoot over the weekend in V4, and had no problems. I exported the DV file watched the program a few times on the TV. I decided to make some fine adjustments. Ok, so I open Vegas 4 normally and load the project. It says "Opening project VBall-01.veg" and starts ok, but then hangs at 3% on the progress bar. It's been 20 minutes now with no progress at all and 100% cpu usage. I haven't touched any of the original files, and I have many GB of disk space free on each hard drive. If I try to close Vegas it just says "A background operation is in progress. Vegas cannot shut down until this operation is complete or cancelled. Would you like to cancel this operation?" [Yes] [No]

However, neither choice has any effect. The only way I can stop the program is through the Windows task manager (I'm running Win2k on a 1.5GHz Athlon, 512MB memory). If I can't reopen this project for editing I'm in real trouble. Can anyone help?

Hi John,

Couple of things to try:

There should be a backup .veg.bak (if you have the option to auto-make enabled)... check the directory where you saved the original.

You could also try changing the prefs to not show waveforms and thumbnails in the timeline...

I trust you have rebooted and all that...

Let's start there and if you still got probs, we can get more elaborate.

I've had the same problem with V4. My situation was releated to my firwire A/D convertor. Try disconnecting any firewire device you have and see if it loads.

Thanks for the lifesaver. Rebooting didn't work, and I didn't have any external firewire device connected.

I was able to open the VBall-01.veg.bak backup file however! Unfortunately that looses me three hours of editing, but at least not the entire weekend.

Obviously I should save more often. Meanwhile I hope that SoFo is able to fix the bugs!

to followup, the main .veg and the .veg.bak timestamps were 3 hours apart, but actually when I looked at the backup file which did load, it seemed that pretty much all my edits were there. The last thing I had done previously on the file which didn't load, was export the project as a single DV file, then I saved the project again one last time and that's the one that hung up on loading. Just FYI in case this helps anyone else, maybe you should save before exporting, then after a long export you should immediately quit without saving.
