V4 v V5 rendering sizes

I am done editing a night of performances and I'm ready to make my dvd.

I have been working with V4 and just installed V5 and used V5 to render my files to mpeg2. I experimented with the 2-pass VBR setting and it took 25 hours to render my 1:21 min video! When I went to burn it with DVDA2 it said the file was too big @ 4.65GB (and that was before AC-3 encoding).

I can't figure out why the file is so big with no where near 2hrs worth of material. I re-rendered without the 2-pass VBR , and deleted a couple of FX on the video and audio to "simplify" the render and this time it took 12 hours and was the exact same size.

I'm pressed to get this onto a disc for a customer so went back to V4 and made some minor edit changes (adding a couple of name credits) and then rendered to Mpeg2 default. This time it only took about 2 hours to render the 1:21 worth of material and the finished mpeg2 file was a more reasonable 2.65 GB. I opened DVDA2 and was able to prepare and burn successfully and the finished disc still has lots of space left....

I'm completely stumpted as to what is making such a huge difference in rendering times and final file size. In my second render with V5 I deleted some FX with the video and audio to simplify the render and the size was exactly the same. I did the exact same deleting of FX with the V4 render so I could compare side-by-side.

So here's the question:
What could make such a time and size difference? How can I get the very best rendering results without tying up my computer for 24 hours and still get around 2 hours onto a dvd?

Still scratching my head on this one.... Want to use the new goodies with V5 but don't want to die of old age waiting for renders that won't fit anywhere!

Thanks for your help,
Teaktart

go here http://www.pcw.co.uk/downloads/1158257 this should help. or you can let DVDA2 do the math. just load your avi file into DVDA2 and let it optimize your file.

It's all about bit rate.

Did you check the 2pass settings for bit-rate?

If you didn't (or don't know what the heck I am talking about)... then there is the problem.

You need to check out a bit-rate calculator to find out what the recommendations are for bit-rate related to the length of your video.. and then apply those to the custom settings in V5.

And... whatever you do NEVER EVER EVER (CAPS on purpose.. this is important) use the Default MPEG2 render template within V5. This template was set at some ridiculous quality setting which results in low file sizes.. but absolutely unuseable quality video. Only ever use the templates that are specifically for DVDA (or setup you own with the right settings).

Liam,

" (or setup you own with the right settings)."

Do you have recommendations?

Thanks

since you are close to the dvd size you need - you can create your project and use dvd shrink and reduce the size ... if you reduce the size by no more than 10% , it doest effect the quality and only takes a few minutes ...

as others have mentioned - use a bit rate calculator and optimise your settings ... first

I'm getting confused....nothing new about that!

My movie is 1:21 and with the V5 render came out at 4.65 GB....on a second render using V5 with the exact same length movie minus FX listed below size was exactly the same @ 4.65 GB

When I rendered same project with V4 without any FX using the "default" Mpeg2 setting it took about 2 hours and was 2.65 GB and looks just fine.
===========================================================

With my V5 render I hit the "custom" button for my mpeg2 render to get to the next window and left the "rendering quality" at GOOD on the "Project window"...
On the "Video" tab I checked the " 2-pass" box which goes with the VBR button. All the bitrates listed below that are auto filled in so I made no changes there.
I had a HSL FX on the video to lessen color saturation(about 13%) and EQ and Wave Hammer FX on my audio track. That combo is what took 25 hrs to render with a reasonably fast computer 2.4 G 1GB RAM , etc.

Without the FX and without the 2-pass options it took 13 hrs to render using V5
Using V4 'default" mpeg2 it took 2 hours and was 2.65 GB as I mentioned above which is an enormous difference. Since I basically ended up comparing the "default" mpeg2 between the softwares, I'm confused what has changed so much with V5 or am I still missing something or some detail setting?

I've been reading several books on V5 and get different opinions on whether to render in V5 in advance or just let DVDA do the job. Any opinions?

Thanks again for your help,
Teaktart

Recommendation... already given... check out a bit-rate calculator... put in the data they want (such as length of video) and it will tell you what settings you should put in for bit-rate.
