V9 and EX1

Filmed the Shuttle launch today with the EX1 and tried out V9 using the MPEG2 clips right from the camera and was able to drag them to the timeline and edit the native clips with no problems. No more conversion!

So far Ive noticed better (smoother) playback than Ive had with V8.

BTW, there was an IMAX 3D camera capturing the sts125 crew leaving for the van ride to the pad. I think they said they had three cameras set up at the pad and are making a movie about the Hubble. Cant wait to see that!

By what logic would they write code that makes the effort to split something that's been joined. That's plain daft.

Just read Doug Jensen's reply to Piotr in DV Info - he has a "contact" at SCS, who says:

"Looks like I was unclear about the process, and I apologize for the error in my previous statement. In Device Explorer, the XDCAM EX .mp4 clips are shown as a single icon in the Device Explorer, but when you drag to the timeline, multiple files are dropped. No frames or audio samples are dropped, but the clips are not technically stitched together into a single clip.

BTW, AVCHD spanned clips are combined to a single clip via Device Explorer, but currently not the EX clips."

Incidentally, Doug's contact also says that EX shot marks are not currently supported in Vegas, but that it's "on their radar".

Not a good news from Doug. It's strange AVCHD is handled better than Sony's own XDCAM EX.

OK, so Device Explorer won't join spanned clips for me the way Clip Browser does. But why it will reverse-engineer clips already merged by Clip Browser, is above my means...

Sad to see no improvement in V9.0a on this.
I didn't realise until yesterday just how lacking this 'feature' is in V9. Not only will it not join clips that span cards it will not join clips that span folders in the one card. End result is my 40 minute recording ends up on the T/L split into multiple events. It sure is confusing to work with and not helped at all by the lack of metadata support.

I also filed an appropriate "feature request" with SCS.
