They're completely separate programs and install to their own folder.
A lot of us like to keep both versions on the machine until we're sure we have all the bugs worked out.
Remember to save any old projects under a new name immediately just in case you have to go back to the older version of vegas.

You can have all versions of Vegas one time on your computer
if you like, without any issues.

Yep...i would recommend you keep Vegas 8 installed
alongside Vegas 9

I recommend keeping previous versions at least until the next subversion (ie: 9a).

Also, you can always read an older veg file with the latest version, but not the other
way.
