I did nothing special. I have a notepad.dll file located in C:\program files\VASST\Freeware and another one in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Sony\Vegas Pro\9.0\Application Extensions
Again, I don't think I did anything special. I am running version 8 on the same system with 9 and both are working with Notepad.

This is going to get you in trouble later. The new VASST installers are placing the command extensions in: C:\Documents and Settings\<account>\Application Data\Sony\Vegas Pro\Application Extensions . Notice there are no version numbers in that path so that both versions of Vegas Pro will see them. This way when Vegas Pro 10 comes out it will see them too without us needing to update the installer again.

You must have. The current installers don't know that Vegas 9 exists and would have never placed the file there and as I just explained, the new installers won't either.
Manually copying files is very dangerous because it causes problems later when you try and update programs and the updates don't work because you manually copied DLL's into folder they shouldn't be in. This quickly becomes a support problem for us.
We are working on the Vegas 9 installers. I would recommend that everyone wait for them.

JR, thanks for the explanation. I remember now that when I installed V9 that my layouts and keyboard shortcuts didn't automatically migrate from V8. When I found this stuff in Sony/Vegas Pro/8.0, I thought the right thing to do would be copy the contents of 8.0 to the 9.0 folder.
Now, I realize that the dll copy is a problem to be avoided but on the other hand, shouldn't Sony give you an option in the install of V9 to migrate your layouts and shortcuts to V9 without us having to go manually looking around for them?
Seems like this would avoid some of these type problems.

Johnny, you must be talking about the planned installer behaviour - right? The current one only places the dll into \Program Files\VASST\Freeware. This is the only place they can be found on my system, and only V8 can see them.
I copied the Notepad files to C:\Documents and Settings\<account>\Application Data\Sony\Vegas Pro\9.0\Application Extensions (originally there wasn't even the Application Extension folder there), and now V9a also can use the Notepad...

I'm talking about the current installers for the VASST products that have been updated to support Vegas Pro 9.0 already, and yes the "planned" installers for the Freeware line. We have a lot of other software than just the Freeware. ;-)

You didn't read my post carefully. Please do not place them in the "Vegas Pro\9.0\Application Extensions" folder. This will cause problems later. If you must copy them yourself, at least copy them into the correct folder which is "Vegas Pro\Application Extensions" with no version number.
