Vegas 10 - An Error Ocurred While Opening A Codec

Sneddy wrote on 4/29/2011, 7:10 PM
I have both Vegas 8 and 10c. While using 8 before I upgraded to 10, I rendered several HD .avi files without any issue. I could use these in the timeline with no troubles in 8. When opening these same files in 10 I get the
'An Error Ocurred While Opening A Codec' message. Do I need to download new codecs? I'm using XP Pro 32 bit SP3. Computer is working great otherwise.
I notice as well I have far fewer HD .avi render options in 10 while I have several options in 8. Thank you for any help with this. Sneddy

Which codec are you trying to use? Don't bother with cineform - it won't work unless you purchase a new copy of cineform.

Thanks for your reply. What I'm trying to figure out is why can Vegas 8 do things that Vegas 10 can't such as handle HD .avi files.and provide more HD render options. I reinstalled 10 but that didn't solve any of these issues. Is XP the problem in not having Codecs for HD files rendered in HD by 10? If yes to that question, where can I download Codecs that will solve this problem? Thanks, Sneddy

What kind of HD AVI files are these that you can't import?
Divx, Xvid, something else?
More information will help us answer your questions.

I have posted a screenshot to Picasa with file info:

I also just downloaded Media Player Classic from the Free Codec site - this is the full package for XP.

I have a Casio FH 25 digital camera. I imported the files into V8 and rendered them as HD .avi before I bought V10. I can use Vegas 8 to do all this - not Vegas 10.

Thanks for any help, Sneddy

As SuperG already told you, you need to buy a new copy of Cineform to be able to use it in Pro 10.
It's $129 direct from Cineform but http://www.videoguys.com/Item/CineForm+NeoScene+for+PC+and+Mac/54E4543435F454E4.aspxVideoguys[/link] has it for $99.

Mike, thank you. When I download Cineform will Vegas automatically recognize it or do I have to use it as third party software to convert the files and then use them in Vegas 10?
When I render HD.avi files in V10, will I have more HD render options in the drop down menu than I currently do? As I mentioned earlier, Vegas 8 has several. Clearly, I'm not understanding how Codecs work in Vegas. I would have thought when upgrading to V10 I wouldn't lose functionality. Is this simply a case of forced upgrading (having to buy Cineform)? Thanks again, Sneddy

Sneddy, I wish I could help but I don't use CIneform so I can't answer your questions.
I know that other codecs I've installed (such as Avid DxHND) show up as a Custom render option so I'm pretty sure Cineform would too, just like it does in Pro 8.
I'm sure someone else will chime in here with the right answer for you.
Good luck with it.

You will need to make a render template for CineForm under Video for Windows *.avi. You can probably use the templates from Vegas Pro 8 has an example of what options to use.

JR - thank you. I checked out your website and look forward to reading your Vegas tutorials. The one on building a render template which you describe here is easy to follow.
Appreciatively, Sneddy

I have had a similar situation....
CFDI clips that work in V8 won't open in V10

My question is:
If I upgrade to the newer version of NEO SCENE from NEO HDV so that I can use the CFDIs in V10 will it also open up all the older CFDIs clips that work in V8?

I'm counting on it being backwards compatible but don't want to assume too much until someone can verify for me it works in both V8 and V10.

Also, are you able to have a copy of Cineforms' latest on both a desktop and laptop without paying for 2 licenses? If I remember right that was being allowed.

Can someone comfirm if thats true?

Thanks much,
Eileen

Hi Eileen,

Good questions. If you get answers could you email me directly?

Thanks,

Never got a response/answer.
What I don't want to do is upgrade, find out its not backward compatible with my earlier footage and then find myself locked out of even using thos clips (V8)....by uninstalling the NEO HDV that I have working right now to upgrade to NEO SCENE for V10
