Vegas 10 trouble with AVI files

I recently upgraded from Vegas Pro8 to 10 and installed the latest version c and build. I cannot open AVI files I previously rendered in Vegas 8 on an XP computer. They were 1280 x 720p and all played back fine on the older software and machine. In Vegas 10c, there is an "error opening a codec" message and "the file could not be opened" on all of them. Also, the 1920 x 1080 24p AVI files that I rendered on the older system adn which played perfectly will load into the new Vegas, but they play back very poorly with frozen stills even in low "preview" resolution though there is plenty of RAM and only one track. However, m2t files play back perfectly in Vegas 10 even with multiple tracks and FX. So I am assuming this is a file type problem. Is there a solution to this? Thank you.

Saying the are AVI files tells nothing.
Download MediaInfo, and tell us what CODECS were used to encode the file.
Then it will be easy to see which one you need to download and install on your new machine.

Never, under any circumstances, download a codec "pack."

all right I did install the mediainfo and this is information I see right now (I might be able to get more )-

AVI Open DML 1.87 GiB 6mn 38s
1 video stream: Cineform

38.7Mbps 1280*720 (16:9) at 29.970 fps Cineform

This is the information on the 1920 avi files that will open but play badly:

AVI: 650 MiB, 6s 840ms
1 video stream YUV
1 audio stream PCM

first video stream
795 mbps 1920*1080 16:9 at 23.976 fps YUV

first audio stream 1 536 kbps 48 khz 16 bits 2 ch pcm microsoft Little/Signed

I mentioned before that all of these files were CREATED in Vegas 8 with no other video software, and I only tried to open them in Vegas 10. I have installed nothing else on these computers. thanks again for your help!

Previous versions of Vegas included the Cineform codec, I don't think version 10 does, so you need to get that.

I think you can still get Cineforn NeoScene from VideoGuys for $99.

Just been through exactly this myself today.

If it's just playback you want then no need to buy anything. You can install the free NEO Player V5 and the Cineform files you rendered in old versions of Vegas will open fine in both 8.0 and 10.0.

This will however disable rendering to Cineform in Vegas 8.0, but there are plenty of good alternatives around now such as MXF or DNxHD.

By the way, after installing NEO Player I always go into the Cineform menu on the Programs menu and choose Tools > Desktop Playback > Quality.

Did a little hacking following my last post...

I still have the Cineform v3.3.0 codec (cfhd.dll) that came with an old version of the NEO Player, and I was able to restore rendering to this codec in Vegas Pro 8.0c by replacing the cfhd.dll files in C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 8.0 and C:\WINDOWS\system32 with it. This is after installing NEO Player v5. Thankfully, after doing this, Cineform files still open in 10.0b as well as 8.0c.

I expect the same could be achieved by overwriting with the older Cineform v2.8 codec that was bundled with Vegas 8.0.

Incidentally, it doesn't appear that 10.0 will render to Cineform at all unless you get a paid version of Cineform.

Hmm... I'm getting a serious display bug with this, even after undoing the hack I just described. Further discussion here.
