Vegas 12 & .MOV files from iPhone5

gripp wrote on 10/1/2012, 10:30 AM
Loaded some .MOV files from iPhone5 into Vegas 12 and they show up correctly in Project Media.

Double click the thumbnails in Project Media to load them into the Trimmer and Vegas immediately crashes.

Drag the same files into the Trimmer, and Vegas immediately crashes.

However drag the same files onto the timeline and Vegas accepts them allows me to edit them, then render them perfectly.

And yes, I do have the latest QuickTime loaded on the PC.

Anyone else had this same experience?

Vegas 12 and iPhone 5 are both brand new.
You should submit a support ticket.

Thanks. Have done this now.

To get a file from explorer into the trimmer, I use right click of the mouse and choose the "open in trimmer" option that comes up. I use the same method to get a file already in Project Media into the trimmer.

MOV files are an Apple product, just like the phones are. The iPhone5 version should be using the latest of MOV files which I find excellent when obtained through a Nikon DSLR camera. i5 phones are so rare in Australia finding one is like looking for hens teeth!

My own experience with Vegas (I use it 20 or 30 hours a week) is that version 12 although on sale is still a very buggy prototype. Hang in theire. I expect Sony will release a fix or patch perhaps even a whole new version in the near future to address the several problems this version has.

Crashing is not as bad as it might seem. If you restart Vegas after a crash it will almost always offer to open the backup version. I've found recovering what I thought was gone data allowed me to continue from near where I was when the crash occured.

As another poser said, report it to Sony. Windows should give you a message about finding a solution. Scroll down and cut & paste the data it wants to send Microsoft and include this in your message to support. They can't fix what they can't repeat and these crashes are random in nature making them hard to pinpoint the cause.

"As another poser said"

I trust that was a typo and you actually meant poster.

Vegas 12 does not work with iPhone 4S video either. Probably a codec issue. Any converters recommended until Sony resolves this issue?

The "solution" I've used in the past is to use Handbrake to convert the .MOV files to .MP4 files - which Vegas will happily accept.

I know it's a bit OT, but I just tried out my iphone out of curiosity.

It is a iphone 4, NOT 5. Import, trimming and timeline work flawlessly.

So are the mov files from the 4S and 5 a bit different and, at present, dodgy to work with?

(Note to self - do not buy a new phone.....)

ron, which version of qt are you using?

LOL
Yeah its a typo.

I just had a play with iPhone 5 files a friend sent me. I'm pretty sure I'm not having any problems because of the Shark007's codecs I'm using but...

If you have Lightroom 4.0 or higher you can open the iPhone .MOV files and carry out some basic editing (if needed) then render them as MP4 files. No trouble opening them with most versions of Vegas. I know just like all workarounds... Take longer than doing it directly but at least you can do some preliminary editing and get an importable file.
