Vegas 13 Pro Randomly Locks Up

prejto wrote on 11/20/2015, 10:50 PM
I'm a fairly new user to Vegas 13. I'm very puzzled by the random crashes That I have no come to expect on a regular daily basis. I would have thought my system could deal with Vegas but perhaps not.

Win 7 Pro
i7 3.4 ghz
SSD
16 GB memory (not enough???)
Working drive is USB 3

Today, for example, I'm in the middle of a 4 camera multi-editing job and I'm playing back an edit and the whole program just hangs. It's very discouraging to say the least. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Peter

You'll have a bunch of people tell you it's your system etc. but having used Vegas on a number of systems I'm convinced Vegas is just buggy in certain areas and perhaps with specific components. I for example can edit for hours on some projects while others will crash a lot. I also have regular problems with crashing when trying to render. I've found that if I have another program open and click on it then jump back to Vegas I can usually get Vegas to render.

Premiere on the other hand gives me almost zero problems on my system.

I still prefer Vegas for multi-cam and photo montages but everything else Premiere CS6 for the stability.

Are you sure your USB3 drive isn't powering down or sleeping? Try the project with the files on internal drives (I know that isn't the preferred process) and see if that makes a difference. If it does, set the USB3 to not go into power save mode.

agree with dxdy - check usb drive. i generally never use external drives for 'working' from* - just storage and back ups.

* i have however successfully used usb's in the past for working from - but have always checked my 'power' settings, etc., to make sure there was no sleep or powering down....

Also check to see if there's anything wrong with your hardware. Vegas was crashing for me because my HD went bad. If it's only Vegas crashing & not the whole system you can pretty much rule out overheating. Could be RAM messing things up. Do you have any codec pack's installed? Those could cause issues.

I've never had random crashes in Vegas w/o something amiss. Has been my system & media files. IE I once had a bad picture that was freezing Vegas when I got to it.

The easiest way to diagnose something like this is to try loading one of your files & try to repeat a crash. If it's truly random (IE might not happen for a week then crashes every 5 minutes one day) it will be a lot harder to nail down.

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Next project will be on an internal drive for sure.

I've disabled USB power saving in the root hubs as well. Hopefully this will help.

Thanks again,

Peter

Peter, look at your SVP Crash files for clues. The offending file or fault will guide you. I have also used USB drives for projects and abandoned them. They are TOO SLOW. Download Samsung Magician and let it tell you how fast your drives read, write, etc. My USB 3.0 Samsung EVO is SLO.

Also, using an SSD also causes it to slow down. A LOT. The magician will help fix that. Windows and other programs write a lot of data to your drive so you want to control it to keep it fast.

That said, Vegas still crashes when I do a lot of color correcting. The only way to stop it is by frequently clearing the Edit History. In fact this prevents a multitude of crashes.
